I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I am a junior at the University of Washington in the Civil and Environmental Engineering major. I have helped all three of my siblings with their math homework, as well as tutored math in high school. I teach snowboarding to elementary age kids in the winter, and in the summer, I assist at a science camp for the same age group. I love helping out and bringing more people into the STEM classes.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I want to help people achieve their goals, gain the confidence to build on what they know, and be able to move forward with their education.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would help students become independent learners by coaching them in ways to think about problems differently, as well as how to look for more information on the topic they are learning. Learning how to learn is a very important skill to develop.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

To help a student having difficulties, I would go back to what they know, and build on that step by step to have a strong foundation until we reach the skill or concept.
