Recent Winnipeg Public Speaking Tutoring Session Notes
Today was our first in-depth study session for his upcoming class. We looked at one chapter and will complete four more later today. The core subject discussed was his communication class, which entails public speaking as well as a small amount of comm. theory and literature. We meet again at 4:00.
Today, the student and I focused on improving her speech, honing in on a narrative of personal growth which highlights her strengths and shows her potential to lead her organization in the coming year.
Next time, we will break down each sentence of her work and improve her speaking abilities in relation to the words.
These sessions are going be to valuable for the student because his father is interested in me helping him in a variety of ways. This session was divided in two, with the first half focused on interview skills. He will be participating in some entrance one-on-one interviews for high schools, and we developed responses to specific likely questions, and strategies for dealing with left-fielders. We spent the second portion of our session reviewing the verbal section of one of the two entrance exams he will be taking over the next month. We have scheduled our next session for next Thursday, and have discussed continuing to meet through the holidays and into January.
The session was split between reviewing for the student's upcoming grammar exam and practicing reading strategies for A Midsummer Night's Dream. We used a pattern-recognition approach to help him understand the function of direct objects in a sentence and how they differ from predicate nouns. He has a strong foundation in grammar and picks up on theoretical aspects quickly. Likewise, he appears to be retaining essential understandings regarding plot developments in Act 1 of AMND and is making good use of his reading journal to record observations and questions. When given control of inquiry, he seems less attracted by questions of characterization and more by structure, poetics, and stagecraft. Emphasizing these as points of access will probably prove effective and build his engagement with the text.
The student and I began working on her essay today. We were able to work together on the introduction and almost all of the first body paragraph. She is going to finish the last two sentences of the body paragraph before we meet tomorrow.
The student and I practiced his speech and condensed his four page outline on corporate media ownership into a single page day-of-speech outline. We covered the visual aid cues and adapting a little of the language for the intended audience. I then coached him through the terminology review portion of his interpersonal communication essay on "The Joy Luck Club." Particular focus was placed in differentiation in source citation style since he was only citing the text book for this essay. We practiced direct quotes and paraphrasing and the most appropriate use of each. Focus was also placed on providing explanation of each definition in his own words, followed by a particular example from the movie to defend his assertion and definition. He was asked to complete his essay on his own finishing the intro and conclusion using my advice and notes, which he did.
