I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. I am a graduate from Stanford University. I received my Bachelor's in Economics there and continued to receive a certificate in Full Stack Web Development from the University of Texas Austin. I have tutored intermittently, primarily teaching test prep; however, I have at different points taught most everything. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. I am a sophomore, English and Computer Science double major at Carleton College who is ecstatic about teaching and spreading my love of learning. I am also greatly interested in sociology and gender studies, and have yet to decide if I will minor in one of those fields, too. I love helping students discover a passion for reading and expressing themselves through writing. My favorite areas to tutor are those having to do with English; I enjoy everything from AP Literature to essay writing for class. I'm currently attending Rice University- pursuing a double major Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics and Mathematical Economics. As you can probably tell I'm very passionate about math, and I'm even more passionate about teaching it! I prefer to teach math a little differently than some of you may used to. Many of students think of math as a plug and chug approach- simply being given formulas and plugging numbers in. While I will give you the formulas and critical things to remember if you insist on it, I prefer to teach mathematics as a form of problem solving. How math works is a beautiful thought process- understanding how a formula was conceived is much more rewarding than simply memorizing it. But in the end it's all up to you- the student. If you want a fast run-down of everything you need to know to ace the test- I'll happily help you. However, if you're willing to think outside of the box and learn some very neat stuff, I'll open the doors to mathematical problem solving for you!

I'm a native Austinite, but I lived in New York while I got my Bachelor's in Comparative Literature and minored in Linguistics. After I graduated I moved back home to Austin and got my Masters in Global Policy Studies at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at UT. Now I'm in Fort Worth, with an MBA I picked up along the way (also from UT Austin) -- apparently I can't stay out of school for long.
