Philosophy trained Galen to think in structured logical sequences, which turns out to be exactly what algebra requires — building one valid step on top of another until a solution emerges. He's particularly effective at walking students through word problems and translating messy real-world language into clean equations, a skill he honed turning abstract ideas into precise written arguments throughout his degree.

When variables start replacing numbers, a lot of students lose the thread of what they're actually doing and why. Michelle reconnects algebra to concrete reasoning — showing, for example, how solving a system of equations is really just finding where two relationships intersect. Her 5.0 rating speaks to how well that approach lands.
I have an MBA from Rice University and both real-world business experience and teaching experience. Most recently, I taught a first-year college course in Microeconomics for nine years, in addition to other classes in the university's international trade program. My students came from over 30 countries! I've worked in over a dozen countries for the U.S. Department of Commerce, as well as for private firms in building engineering and the energy industry. I enjoy helping students gain competence and master their chosen area of study.
I am here because I thoroughly enjoy working with students and watching them succeed in their academic studies. As a Mathematics major at the University of Arizona (currently a junior), I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring: I have been a teacher's assistant for a Calculus II section at my university and have spent a great deal of time assisting students with non-math related subjects as well such as English and essay-writing, time management and study skills techniques, and standardized test prep (SAT).
The leap from solving simple equations to manipulating systems, quadratics, and rational expressions trips up a lot of students who did fine in earlier math. Rebia's approach is to diagnose exactly where the reasoning breaks down — whether it's distributing negatives, factoring, or translating word problems into equations — and rebuild from that specific point. She holds a 5.0 client rating.
Most Algebra struggles aren't really about algebra — they're about a shaky step two or three concepts back that never got addressed. Kristi diagnoses exactly where the gap is, whether it's distributing negatives, solving multi-step equations, or translating word problems into expressions, and rebuilds from there. Her 5.0 rating speaks to how quickly students start gaining confidence.
That moment when variables replace numbers for the first time can either spark curiosity or shut a student down — it depends entirely on how it's taught. Alina tackles foundational algebra topics like solving linear equations, graphing inequalities, and factoring polynomials by building each skill in small, logical steps. Her engineering background gives her a knack for making abstract notation feel concrete.
I am a graduate of the University of Florida's PhD program in the Microbiology and Cell Science Department. Since graduation, I have worked for a startup company studying neurodegenerative biomarker uptake by immune cells in the peripheral blood during neuroinflammation. While I tutor a variety of subjects, my main passions lie in biology, microbiology, and chemistry. I believe it is important for students to not only learn the subject material but also to discover how they learn in general and how they can learn to take assessment tests efficiently.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I'm not tutoring or buried in my textbooks, you will either find me rock climbing at the Triangle Rock Club, playing Ultimate Frisbee, working on my car, or enjoying the great outdoors (beaches, mountains, forests--you name it, I love it). On rainy weekends I enjoy tinkering with computers and old electronics, playing Pokemon, or picking at my guitar.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a graduate of Wesleyan University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with High Honors. With eight years of experience working in education, I've tutored students in math, science, history, and English, as well as helped students prepare for standardized tests. I've guided adults towards passing the US Citizenship Exam and taught English in India, where I lived for six months. Whenever I work with a student I personalize the lessons to fit their particular learning style, since I know every student is unique and having the right fit can make all the difference in making learning fun and effective. My strengths are tutoring the social sciences and humanities, as well as making math and standardized tests approachable to students that normally don't like those subjects. In my spare time I like traveling, spending time in the outdoors (climbing & backpacking), meditation, and playing soccer. Next fall I will be beginning my PhD in Education at Harvard University.

Frequently Asked Questions
Many students struggle with the shift from basic arithmetic to abstract algebraic thinking—especially when it comes to understanding why we use variables and how to manipulate equations conceptually rather than just following memorized steps. Multi-step equations, word problems, and graphing are frequent pain points, along with building confidence when mistakes happen. Personalized tutoring helps students see the underlying patterns and connections, transforming algebra from a collection of disconnected rules into a coherent system they can apply flexibly.
During an initial session, a tutor will assess your current understanding—working through a few algebra problems to identify specific gaps, whether in foundational concepts or more advanced topics like systems of equations or polynomials. They'll ask about your learning style and any areas causing frustration, then develop a personalized plan tailored to your goals and pace. This diagnostic approach ensures every session builds on what you already know rather than starting from scratch.
Showing work isn't just a teacher requirement—it's how you catch your own mistakes, communicate your thinking clearly, and build deeper understanding. Tutors help you develop organized problem-solving strategies, teaching you to break multi-step problems into manageable chunks and explain each decision you make. Over time, this practice builds both accuracy and confidence, because you can see exactly where errors happen and learn to self-correct.
Word problems require translating real-world language into mathematical symbols—a skill that's separate from actually solving the equation. Tutors teach a systematic approach: identifying what you know, what you're looking for, and how to set up the equation before diving into calculations. With guided practice, students learn to recognize common problem patterns and build confidence tackling unfamiliar scenarios.
Yes. Tutors in Tucson work with students across the region's 67 school districts, each of which may use different curricula and teaching approaches. Whether your school emphasizes traditional methods, integrated math sequences, or problem-based learning, tutors adapt their instruction to align with your specific curriculum while reinforcing core algebraic concepts that transfer across any approach.
Math anxiety often stems from feeling rushed or misunderstood in a classroom setting. One-on-one tutoring removes that pressure—you work at your own pace, ask questions without judgment, and experience small wins that rebuild confidence. As students see themselves successfully solving problems they previously found intimidating, anxiety naturally decreases and a growth mindset develops.
Graphing connects algebraic equations to visual representations, helping you see how changes to an equation affect its graph. Tutors teach you to understand key features—slope, intercepts, and transformations—rather than just plotting points mechanically. With practice and visual feedback, graphing becomes a powerful tool for solving equations and understanding function behavior.
