About Me

I hold CISSP, Pentest+, and OSCP certifications. Experience: I have 6 years of experience teaching at the college level at University of Maryland Global Campus. The classes I have taught include: CMIT 386 Penetration Testing and Cyber Red Teaming CMIT 495 Current Trends and Projects in Computer Networks and Cybersecurity (Capstone) CMIT 425 Advanced Information Systems Security CMIT 321 Ethical Hacking I have also taught hands-on courses on penetration testing, reverse engineering, web application security testing, mobile security, and exploit development at cybersecurity conferences on six continents such as Blackhat, DEF CON, Brucon, Security BSides, and SecZone. I have also taught at training centers such as TSTC in Veenendaal, Netherlands. I have taught material I created myself as well as other organization's materials. I have experience teaching EC Council's Certified Ethical Hacker and am a Certified Ethical Instructor. I have also taught online through my own consulting company as well as for virtual conferences during the COVID-19 pandemic and for training companies such as O'Reilly. I have created highly popular on-demand training content for platforms such as Cybrary and Pentester Academy. I wrote Penetration Testing: A Hands-On Introduction to Hacking to be the learning resource I wished I had had when trying to independently learn penetration testing. That book has gone on to sell more than 15,000 copies in 5 languages. I later developed an accompanying online video series for Cybrary which has been viewed by more than 50,000 students. Collectively the books and video series have been cited by countless students as the resource most responsible for their pursuing a career in cybersecurity. Approach: I first became a teacher and tutor out of frustration at the lack of resources that were available to beginners in my field of cybersecurity. Though there is much more information available now, when I began my career in cybersecurity, I encountered many gatekeepers and esoteric knowledge bases. I began teaching introductory courses at cybersecurity conferences to help other newcomers, particularly women, minorities, and the neurodiverse get the prerequisite knowledge needed to excel in cybersecurity careers. Given the nature of what I most often teach, my approach to teaching is often dictated by the method of delivery. For example, if I'm teaching in person, I have much more flexibility than if I'm teaching online. Similarly, if I'm teaching a day long class things will be quite different than if I'm teaching a semester long class. I prefer using a student-centric/constructivist approach wherein the students are aware of the content that we are to cover and I assist those who encounter problems. However, the nature of our industry most often requires me to take a teacher-centric lecturing approach. When possible, I try to punctuate that with intermittent small-group instruction and/or project-based instruction. In general, I try and find the approach that seems to work best with the class or student that I'm tutoring. I am on the autism myself and am very familiar with the "girls can't computer" mentality of some in our industry. If you student is struggling with confidence, I am the tutor for you. I am particularly interested in helping women, minorities, and the neurodiverse. I am well versed in working with varying learning styles as well as neurodiversity such as autism, ADHD, etc. It is my belief that neurodiversity can be a super power and am committed to helping students find learning strategies that work for their brain.
