Elizabeth
- I love tutoring literacy because I get to see students strengthen skills that are key to their future success.
About Me
I am passionate about empowering students through literacy, helping them develop fundamental skills and build confidence in their ability to work hard and make progress. I have been involved in literacy tutoring with K-6 students for the last 5 years, after many years of working with children, books, technology, and schools. I have experience with a variety of scientific research-supported literacy curriculum, and will use UFLI Foundations to tutor if no materials are provided. My teaching philosophy is practice makes progress---we all make mistakes when learning how to do things (and even when we know how to do them!)---mistakes are normal! When we do make a mistake we simply try again and practice some more! I use modeling, immediate feedback, delayed practice, specific praise, and lots of eyes on text time to help students build phonological and phonemic awareness, phonics skills, and fluency. I have a BA in Linguistics and Asian Languages and Literature (Japanese focus), with a minor in Medieval Studies, from the University of MN, and a Master's in Library and Information Science from Saint Catherine University.
