Biology Tutor • +36 Subjects
Biology been a passion of mine for as long as I can remember. As soon as possible, I set myself on a track to have as much biology in my life as possible. In middle school I entered as many science fairs as I could. In high school I elected to enter into the IB program in order to take both IB Biology SL and IB biology HL (in addition to the standard high school biology class). While enrolled in IB Biology, I often formed study groups and peer tutored fellow classmates on a variety of concepts. After finishing up high school I entered into the B.S program for Biology at SUNY New Paltz. Here my studies focused on the cell/molecular side of cell biology (although I did take many electives in ecology and plant biology). During my undergraduate career I worked both as a tutor for general biology and genetics, and as a professional note taker. Both of these positions helped me hone my skills as a tutor, and realize the importance of having a solid foundation of organized note taking and study skills.Upon completion of my bachelors degree, I choose to enter into a biology masters program at Hunter College that concentrated on biotechnology. This program taught me to understand the various techniques used in biological research. I learned to identify which techniques are applicable for which situations, as well as how to apply the techniques. In addition to the biotechnology courses, my coursework also focused with genetics, cell biology, molecular biology and developmental biology. After graduation from my masters program, I had the choice to enter into research. While I enjoyed being a part of research throughout my college career, I realized that my true passion lays in teaching. I have started working as a professional tutor at one of the surrounding universities, tutoring students in general biology, genetics and cell/molecular biology. I joined Varsity Tutors as a means to help more students gain the love of biology that I do.

ACCUPLACER Arithmetic Tutor • +29 Subjects
I have always had a passion for education, especially tutoring. I tutored various subjects at Dalton State College, where I received my bachelor's degree in English and an associate degree in sociology. Then, I moved to Colorado where I became a Denver Math Fellow. My job was to help small groups and individual students catch up in math. I built strong relationships with my students, and they all achieved growth on PARCC. Last year, I entered the Denver Teacher Residency and taught seventh grade math in Denver Public Schools. I recently graduated with my master's degree in curriculum, instruction, and assessment with endorsements in special education and culturally, linguistically diverse learners, and I will be working as a middle school math interventionist next year. Although most people think you can't be a "math person" and an "English person" at the same time, I defy the stereotype because I believe that all knowledge is connected. I aim to help students realize the relevance of the content to their lives and to break things down into manageable steps. I celebrate mistakes as learning opportunities, and I emphasize the importance of perseverance. My goal is to inspire students to think critically and to help them develop the academic skills they need to succeed. I work with students of all ages, and I often find that I learn just as much from them as they learn from me!

AP English Language and Composition Tutor • +29 Subjects
I am a junior at New York University, and I tutor students in SAT prep, AP English Language and Literature, high school English, writing, college essay writing, and French. Tutoring is a passion of mine because I think that learning can be an exciting and enriching experience for all students, whether or not they know it. It can be hard for some students to find a reason to be engaged in their education when they're in large classes, but tutoring offers a unique opportunity to cater to their individual learning style and to identify ways they can be invested in their own education. I love having the opportunity to be involved in that process, as I believe that education has the power to change lives.

My life experiences to date have taken me across four continents. I was born in India before spending my formative years in Algeria and England, before again traveling westward, to North America, where I expanded my global perspective in French-speaking Montral and multicultural Texas. The longitudes and latitudes that I have traversed in a quarter-century have instilled in me an irrepressible thirst for discovery, while the breadth of my experiences made me confident that I could make a meaningful in my community.I am a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin and will be continuing my studies in International Finance and Economic Policy at Columbia in August. Until then, I am free to tutor/teach in any capacity that I can.

I am in my fourth year as a math education and math double major at Winona State University in Winona, MN. I have worked for about four years as a University math tutor and have tutored classes ranging from college Algebra to introductory real analysis. I also have a lot of experience working with middle and high school age students through my field experiences. Why math is strongest subject, I tutor some statistics and computer science (Python is my favorite language) courses. Most importantly, I love learning and teaching others about math!My favorite subject to tutor is Calculus, in particular Calculus 1, because I love the depth of intuition one can achieve by thinking about topics visually. I classify my teaching/tutoring style as Experimentalist, in the sense of John Dewey, because I believe that learning is best done through hands-on experience. I recognize that students' learning styles vary drastically, so I love implementing a number of educational techniques, be they aural, visual, or kinesthetic, to maximize student engagement with content. My extra-academic interests include learning about mathematics recreationally, watching movies and TV shows, and playing video games.
