I am a huge component of constant feedback. A session may be wasted if feedback is only provided in the last five minutes. For this reason, I would help students stay motivated by maintaining a conversation over the material and relating to other interesting aspects of their life. Hobbies: books, reading, writing, music, art, sports

I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. I also believe that fostering curiosity and determination are the keys to success. Hobbies: art, books, reading, cooking, music, swimming, writing

I am a science writer and podcaster with a rigorous academic background who is passionate about sharing my knowledge of chemistry with curious minds. I earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and Asian art history from UC Berkeley and completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry at MIT. I have five years of experience teaching college-level general and organic chemistry courses at various institutions in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, and hope to expand on my experience as a private tutor. Often a required subject for other classes, chemistry is often considered "the central science" as it's related to biology and physics, and I appreciate that chemical principles can be observed throughout daily life from cooking to medicine to electronics. I believe that education is the world's greatest social equalizer and hope that my students learn to make new connections between classes and other aspects of their life. Outside of science, I love dogs, food, and the outdoors.

I am a graduate from Stanford University. I received my Bachelor's in Economics there and continued to receive a certificate in Full Stack Web Development from the University of Texas Austin. I have tutored intermittently, primarily teaching test prep; however, I have at different points taught most everything. Here in the Houston area, I've worked with Testmasters, C2 Education and Test Geek. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding. Hobbies: art, travel, sports, reading, writing, books, traveling, music

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from all three San Marcos school districts—Hays ISD, San Marcos ISD, and Wimberley ISD—with tutors who understand the specific curriculum and standards each district follows. With 20 schools and nearly 9,500 students across the area, we've built relationships with families throughout San Marcos and can match students with tutors familiar with their school's expectations and pacing.
San Marcos students typically seek help with algebra, geometry, and chemistry—subjects that are foundational for high school success and college readiness under Texas standards. We also work with many students on reading comprehension, writing skills, and test preparation for STAAR exams, which are critical benchmarks in Texas public schools. Tutors can tailor support to your student's specific grade level and the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards their school is teaching.
Absolutely. STAAR testing is a key milestone in Texas schools, and personalized 1-on-1 instruction is highly effective for test preparation. Tutors can focus on the specific TEKS standards your student needs to master, identify knowledge gaps, and build confidence through targeted practice—all at a pace that works for your student rather than a whole-class setting.
San Marcos schools maintain an average student-teacher ratio of about 12.8:1, which is reasonable, but even in well-staffed classrooms, individual students can get lost in the mix. Personalized 1-on-1 instruction ensures your student gets undivided attention, customized pacing, and immediate feedback—something that's difficult for teachers to provide in a traditional classroom setting, no matter how dedicated they are.
The first session is all about understanding your student's learning style, current challenges, and goals. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, discuss what's working and what isn't in their current classes, and create a personalized plan for support. This foundation helps ensure that every session afterward is focused and productive.
Yes. While many students seek tutoring for remedial support, we also work with advanced learners who want to deepen their understanding, explore subjects beyond the standard curriculum, or prepare for advanced placement and honors courses. Tutors can challenge gifted students with enrichment activities and help them develop critical thinking skills that go beyond typical classroom instruction.
Scheduling flexibility is one of the biggest advantages of personalized tutoring. Whether your student has sports, band, or other commitments, Varsity Tutors can work around your family's calendar to find times that fit. Sessions can be arranged before school, after school, on weekends, or whenever works best for your student's routine.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions you choose. We work with families across San Marcos to find tutoring plans that fit different budgets. To get a personalized quote based on your student's specific needs, connect with us for a consultation—there's no obligation, and we can discuss what investment makes sense for your family.
