I am able to determine what obstacles are preventing a student from grasping a concept, and create different means of overcoming those obstacles. Creating a partnership with the student and understanding what he or she needs to overcome is what makes me a great tutor.

I am an undergraduate at Rice University, and my favorite subjects to tutor are math and science. I also enjoy doing test prep, and my experience comes from helping fellow students in high school. One of the most important aspects of tutoring is fitting the teaching style to each student. One method that works great for one student may not work well for another. Tutoring is all about coming up with different ways for my students to understand the material. If my student is not interested in the subject we are learning, I will try to find a way to tie in their interests and passions into the subject to better engage them. I want to be there for my students, not only as a tutor, but also as a friend. In addition to my interests in math and science (and learning in general), I enjoy swimming, biking, reading, and cooking. I am a science writer and podcaster with a rigorous academic background who is passionate about sharing my knowledge of chemistry with curious minds. I earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry and Asian art history from UC Berkeley and completed a PhD in inorganic chemistry at MIT. I have five years of experience teaching college-level general and organic chemistry courses at various institutions in California, Massachusetts, New York, and Texas, and hope to expand on my experience as a private tutor. Often a required subject for other classes, chemistry is often considered "the central science" as it's related to biology and physics, and I appreciate that chemical principles can be observed throughout daily life from cooking to medicine to electronics. I implement the Socratic Method into my teaching style: I ask plenty of questions that force students to deeply understand the material and to explain how they know why their answer is correct or not. I also believe it is my duty to equip students with tools to become better learners themselves which entails welcoming unique and creative approaches to solving problems, encouraging students to connect the relationships between different topics and subjects, and recommending using external sources and materials to learn and supplement understanding.
