The host of the hit show Storm Chasers for four seasons, Dr. Reed Timmer has been chasing tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, and wildfires his entire life. His fascination with extreme weather led him to earn a PhD in meteorology from the University of Oklahoma, naturally situated in the heart of Tornado Alley. For decades he’s been roaming the country in a series of custom storm-chasing vehicles named “Dominator,” educating the world on weather safety and the causes of some of nature’s most powerful weather events.
About the class
It’s the ultimate meteorological field trip: a live ride-along to a tornado with storm chaser Reed Timmer. Join Reed live from his Dominator chase vehicle for an interactive exploration of how storm chasers predict and track storms; where, when, and why tornadoes form; and what it’s like to chase a tornado. Then buckle up as the Dominator takes off and brings you along for a virtual ride to see a tornado up close under the expert guidance of the world’s favorite chaser. How It Works: The forecast indicates that Monday, May 2 should have ideal conditions for a storm chase, so the class is a go for that afternoon! Here’s the plan:

Class will begin at 3:30pm Central Time (the time zone of Tornado Alley), with a weather briefing and overview of meteorology that goes into establishing a tornado target area.

You’ll then get a tour of the safety and scientific features of Reed’s Dominator chase vehicle before heading out to chase the storm.

Class will begin during the calm before the storm (literally!), and you’ll get an overview of tornado forecasting while Reed and his team plan out the day’s chase.

Please note: while 4pm Central Time is prime time for tornadoes to form, there’s a chance the storm and tornado intercept will happen later than that. You’ll be able to stay with the chase in its entirety, but due to the uncertainty of the weather class may not end right on time…we’d hate to cut it off just as it’s getting good!
