Members-Only Event: Hands-On DNA Lab

Grades 7-10

DNA defines almost everything about us: in fact, there are 10 billion miles of DNA in the human body. But how many people have held or seen DNA up close? In this exclusive, hands-on event with scientist Phil Cook, learning members will get that chance! Using basic household ingredients they’ll extract and analyze DNA and discuss the building blocks of genetics live on camera with a small group. It’s a deoxyribonucleic event they won’t want ot miss!

To participate in DNA extraction, students will want to have the following materials:

•Two strawberries.

•2 teaspoons of dish soap.

•½ cup of water.

•½ cup cold rubbing alcohol.

•1 Ziploc bag.

•2 plastic cups.

•1 coffee filter.

•1 coffee stirrer.

•1 tsp table salt
