I am a teacher with 25 years of experience in elementary education (K-8, Level III license).
I have a masters degree from the University of New Mexico with an emphasis in Reading, ESL, and Language Arts. I enjoyed teaching reading, writing and math skills in the classroom with 16 years primarily in Kinder, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. The next 5 years I worked as a reading interventionist (small group) helping students to improve their reading skills. I also worked helping teachers improve their teaching skills for 2 years. My last 2 years were in middle school (6/7th grades) teaching English Language Development (ESL). I have also tutored in afterschool programs and privately. My whole career has been geared towards students with English language needs, but I think all students are language learners. I also tutored students from China in English language improvement remotely. All my students have taught me that academic and proper English are very important to advance, but are also difficult to learn. So I must be very creative to help them succeed. Although I like and tutor in all elementary subjects, my most favorite is writing. I think writing has become a lost skill and because it takes much attention and consistency, it is often the most overlooked in school. Each student and class is different so I strongly believe in being the kind of teacher I would want my own children to have. In my spare time, I like to read, color, garden, travel, watch old movies, and spend time with family, my cats, and friends.
