I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

My first tutoring position was not far from my house. A student in the High School had pulled a latch on the fire hose and she was suspended for the whole year. It was April and I was working for a tutoring company. The company called and asked me if I would be willing to take this student on. They warned me she would be difficult.
I was nervous, but I said yes, because I wanted the experience. She was very shy and timid when we first met. Her mother was a sweet lady too. The student was having much difficulty with Social Studies, which was one subject, in which she was failing. The curriculum was World War I. I went to the library, found a number of books, especially children's books and we sat outside and went through what life was like back then in the early 1900's. I felt that it was more important if she knew what the decade looked like and other things that were happening like:
Food, dress, stores, etc.
We began to work on research to identify the countries and political events that were occurring at that time. This was difficult for her but we used a line and colored pencils to differentiate and perceive countries and political involvements in the war.
During the end of the lesson we watched, "All Quiet on The Western Front". She was bored, but some parts she found interesting.
Eventually, she came around and wanted to know about some of the other subjects she was having problems with. It was a great experience.
