I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Hi! My name is Jeanelle. I just want to share a few things about me. One of those things is I enjoy tutoring, especially in math. Not just because I know it and understand it, but because I love to explain how it works. I love to break down each line and rule of each problem to get to the final solution. No matter the subject, I love to learn and love to pass on what I learn. Here is why...

A little bit about my background...As a graduate of Morgan State University's Electrical Engineering program, I was trained in problem solving, math, and technology. My engineering degree afforded me the opportunity to work as an analyst for the United States Government (straight out of college), travel abroad, mentor junior analysts, and sit as the Scholarship chair (providing funding for students choosing to continue their education). Although I loved what I did as a government employee, I also loved taking the journey of exploring more, from styling and project management to law. No matter what it has been, I have always found a way to give back by tutoring (whether formally or informally).

Tutoring began, for me, in the course of my undergraduate studies. While being a mentor for first and second year undergraduate engineering students, I also became their tutors. The program's goal was to make sure each student was supported, encouraged, and helped with their educational studies. After graduation, I decided to continue tutoring but for students in middle school and high school. I did so both paid through a tutoring company out of Virginia and volunteering with my church. I also had the opportunity to volunteer my time and knowledge in math and reading for children living at a children's home outside of the United States. My experience as a tutor in math and reading here, in the U.S., and abroad for students of all ages (Elementary school to High School) has helped me to develop my tutoring skills, to include listening, effectively communicating, and supporting and encouraging independent learning.

When it comes to how I tutor, I believe it is important, even from my own experience, to teach and apply. Bombarding anyone with information without showing them and allowing them to apply what has been taught is a disservice. Application gives opportunity for repetition, and repetition brings about a habit that becomes a norm. Once someone has an understanding, whatever they have been taught can be repeated at will. We learn from repetition, not just from listening.

Complete comprehension is always the goal.

Thank you in advance for the opportunity to tutor your child. I do not take the responsibility lightly.
