I learned in my early teacher training that the classroom learning starts with the students rather than the teacher. At the time this was a revelation to me: the idea that true learning occurs when students actively engage in material rather than passively take in information. This approach toward instruction, which was new to me at the time, inspired me to initially pursue a career in education and it continues to inform every lesson plan that I write today.
I want my students become more independent, self-driven learners. Allowing students to work with material in a variety of ways, collaboratively, individually, and independently, allows students to learn in ways that best suit them. Delivering course material to students in a variety of ways also allows students to engage in information in ways that stimulate different modes of learning and helps students better understand themselves as learners and critical thinkers.
I understand that the challenge of helping students become more thoughtful and independent learners is much more daunting than merely sharing information with them or simply showing them the way. However, it was this very challenge that initially intrigued me and eventually moved me to pursue a career in education during that first teacher training course I attended many years ago. Since then I have experienced my share of failures, frustrations, and deep reflection-inducing moments. However, my love of this profession and my drive to be the best facilitator possible always keeps me coming back for more.
