I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe that a teacher should not be just a provider of information, but a facilitator in helping students learn how to think critically, develop reasoning skills, and learn how to analyze any given situation that they are presented with in their lives.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, I would spend most of my time getting to know the student and what they are struggling with. I believe that I need to understand them and their particular issues first, before I can come up with a plan to help them.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student to become an independent learner by encouraging them to think for themselves, and not to accept anything that I or that other people say as necessarily correct.
