I have a masters's degree in German and many years of experience in teaching and tutoring German language and literature at all levels (beginning and advanced). I have lived and studied in Germany (I am a Fulbright scholar) and know its culture quite well. I also have worked for German companies (publishing and pharmaceutical) and am very familiar with both business and scientific German (please see my resume).
Learning a second language is difficult and takes some time, but it is wonderfully rewarding to make the effort. The linguistically trained person has access to another country's art and culture that cannot be obtained without knowledge of its language.
Even if one only visits the German-speaking areas of the world (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Alsace, and the Tirol, for example) as a tourist, a basic knowledge of German adds tremendously to the quality of one's traveling experience.

I have written several Wikipedia articles on somewhat obscure art topics. I have translated several of the works of E.T.A. Hoffmann from his German (over 200 years old now) to my English and I have created a little book based on quotes from the diaries and literary works of Franz Kafka (translated from the German to English) that I have illustrated with photographs that I took in Prague, where Kafka spent all but a few months of his life. I love to travel and have been to Europe 19 times. I am a member of Opera Idaho, Ballet Idaho, the Boise Jazz Society, and Zoo Idaho. I support Zoo Idaho because I love animals (perhaps that is why I obtained a bachelor's degree in zoology) and want to help in a small way with the Zoo's efforts to conserve endangered species worldwide. I walk daily for about an hour with my dog Winter, a member of a breed called the Norwegian Elk Hounds, which goes back 1,000 years to the time of the Vikings.
