Certified Tutor

I recently graduated from Emory University with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in Psychology. I also completed courses for the pre-medicine track because I ultimately intend to pursue a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree.
Working as a tutor with Varsity Tutors is my first official work experience as a teacher of any sort; however, I've been involved in unofficial sessions of tutoring and instruction for as long as I can remember. Currently, I am available to tutor up to high school level math as well as college level psychology. There are several other subjects that I am interested in tutoring in the near future. My favorite subjects to tutor are psychology and math. Psychology is a long-term passion of mine and I am very comfortable across a wide range of disciplines within the field. In addition, math is a subject, I believe, that is best learned through individual attention. I am fascinated to learn about and eager to adapt to each individual student's preferred methods of learning.
My teaching philosophy is student-centered. In other words, I place a ton of emphasis on how each individual learns. From there, I can think of the best ways that a student can learn. I am also always open to suggestions from the student or parents. My main goal as a tutor is to help students achieve their goals while alleviating potential stress and/or negativity surrounding a certain subject or field. I feel that I can get along with students of all cultures given that I have lived all over the world and experienced several cultures outside of my own. I look forward to meeting new students and learning from one another!

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy revolves around adapting to each individual student's learning style. I believe it is critical to establish a clear line of communication with the student in order to find out the best ways to interact and learn together.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would like to start every first session with personal introductions so that the student and I can know a bit more about each other before any lesson commences. In addition, I will ask each student his or her preferred modes of learning.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student's independence in learning by teaching him or her ways to think critically about each problem, assignment, test, etc. That way, even in situations where the student may not have a tutor, he or she knows the methods by which to tackle the issue and succeed.
