My name is Armen and I love teaching and helping others succeed academically!
I understand what it’s like to struggle with a subject, since I experienced challenges in school myself. Despite that, I graduated from high school with flying colors, went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from UCSB, a master’s degree from SDSU and a law degree from CWSL.
I have taught younger people in the Santa Barbara region for many years in a program called, Academic Chess, and turned some of my students into very high ranking players for their age brackets. I’ve held both group lessons, as well as worked individually to achieve significant improvements in my student’s abilities. I also help friends, family, and relatives with their course work ranging from elementary school through college and am told I’m quite enjoyable to work with.
My teaching style is very fun, calm, easy going, but also stress accountability. It is important to set goals and make sure we get the results we’re looking to attain.

What is your teaching philosophy?
Learning has to be fun! I try to make my sessions enjoyable, fast paced, and memorable so that it maximizes the effectiveness of our learning experience.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Determine the student's learning style, and tailor my teaching to match the student's pace.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By providing the necessary analytical thinking skills that permit independent learning.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Success doesn't happen overnight, but if we keep working at it, the results will come, and that is the ultimate motivation.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Address what the difficulty is and adjust my style to make sure the concepts are learned.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Show them the tricks that effective readers use to get through material effectively.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listen to the student's needs, make specific plans for addressing them, and make sure results are tracked.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
The key is to show how a subject can be fun. High energy combined with a passion for the subject can change opinions on a subject matter.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Check and verify. Make sure the student can repeat the method/steps back to me accurately.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Make sure to let them know they are doing a great job when they get things right. Be respectful in explaining where the errors are.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Determine where the strengths and weaknesses are by looking at scores and asking questions.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I listen to what the student's needs are, and make changes to appropriately meet those needs.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Examples, Examples, Examples! It is important to drill repetition down. Both visual and hands-on.
