Certified Tutor

My name is Kyle. I am a Senior studying Mathematics at Rutgers, the State University of NJ. I was recently accepted into a 5 year Masters program through the Graduate School of Education and hope to be teaching High School Mathematics in the future.

Math is often described as one of the biggest barriers between a student's success and failure in school. Unfortunately, the reason for this lies in the way that Mathematics is taught in our schools. Because of the looming presence of standardized testing, the subject is taught through procedures, and not through conceptual understanding. Procedures have many limitations, whereas with conceptual understanding, students will be able to apply their findings to the real world. My goal as a tutor is to teach students conceptually.

Outside of my areas of subject, I love music. I am the Performance Manager of the Rutgers University Glee Club and have traveled across the country and abroad performing with my group. I also played Baritone in my high school marching band, and have been involved in countless musicals.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My philosophy is to teach students conceptually rather than through procedures. To that end, students will be able to apply their intuition outside of the classroom and in real-life situations

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I would introduce myself and get to know my client. After introductions have been established, I would give the student a set of problems to gauge the level that this student is currently at. Then I would address any issues they feel they have, and go from there.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The best way to do this is to ensure students understand topics conceptually. That way, students will be able to understand problems and apply them to real-world situations.
