Certified Tutor

I graduated from the University of North Florida with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. During my years in college in my spare time, I have tutored students in various levels in math, up to college sophomore level. I can tutor in math subjects from K-12, and up to college level, depending on the math subject. Some of my favorite subjects to tutor in are College Algebra, AP Calculus AB, and Pre-Calculus because those subjects are what students have trouble with before they enter college, and I like to help students in these particular subjects. My tutoring style is that I like to help students go through the problem and allow them to make mistakes, so that I can guide them to the right answer. I also like to use this method called Socratic thinking to allow the student to tell or show me how they got the answer for the problem. If the student does not do or even try the problem, then I cannot help or guide the student to what they need to do to solve the problem. It is better for the student to try and fail at solving the problem than to not have tried at all. I am a person that is passionate about mathematics, and even more enthusiastic about helping students with their difficulties in math.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to always practice, take your time to learn anything new, and enjoy what you learn.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would ask them what particular subject they are studying, what problem they are currently working on, and what they do not understand about the problem.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Encourage them to try the problem, give them positive feedback when they try the problem on their own, and understand what they are doing.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Positive attitude, encourage them to keep going, and push them to their full potential.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Ask them what concepts they have covered for the specific assignment they are doing and get them to do practice problems similar to the ones on their assignment.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Encourage them to do their best on each problem, use positive, constructive criticism when they are doing something wrong, and praise them for getting the right answer.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Refresh their memory about certain things they need to remember in order to do the assignment, such as theorems or concepts to use. Ask them to repeat the concepts and theorems in their head so that it is stuck in their memory.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Encourage them to practice, practice, and practice. Let them know that they do not have to be perfect in the subject they find difficult in order to get a good grade.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Help them to understand what they are reading, and go through the reading passage to answer any comprehensive questions.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I ask them what subject they are currently struggling with and evaluate their goals to create a plan for them to help them achieve academic success in that difficult subject.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would try to make my tutoring more engaging, fun, and relate the material they are learning to the real world. I would ask them how they learn other things the best way they can, and I try to apply that to my tutoring sessions.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Textbooks, paper, pencils, calculators, online tools, patience.
