What is your teaching philosophy?

A teacher should encourage all students to meet their fullest potential by ensuring that students are engaged and understanding the material.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

During a first session with a student, I would ask questions about their tutoring goals and their current mathematics class. I would also discuss their textbook and begin working on their assignments together.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by showing an example of a mathematics problem, and then teaching them to understand the question and how to obtain the correct answer step-by-step.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

If a student is struggling with reading comprehension, it is especially difficult because they need to understand the question that is being asked in order to solve it. Therefore, it is important to read the question again. Also, it can be helpful to highlight or underline important parts of the question.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that it is important to be able to quickly determine where the student's lack of understanding is so that I can teach them to move forward in order to solve a problem.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would help a student become engaged in a subject that they are struggling in by making a real-life connection to a topic that they are familiar with.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Once the student and I reviewed the material together, I would ask the student to solve a problem on their own to determine if they had an understanding of the concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

It is important to give positive feedback and comments to a student who is learning a new subject in order to build their confidence.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by asking them to complete a problem so that I can see why they are confused with the material, so then I can help them to move forward.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt to tutoring to the student's needs by moving at a faster or slower pace depending on their ability and understanding of the concept.
