Fabrianne: Streamwood tutor

Certified Tutor

I am a software engineer with a strong math background. I'm passionate about the subjects I teach and I'm looking to encourage that enthusiasm in my students.

When I first began working towards my degree I started to tutor both college and middle school students in math. I found that I enjoy teaching and since then have tutored in Math, Science and Engineering.

I am comfortable tutoring students with learning challenges. I personally struggle with Dyslexia and ADHD, so I can share tools and methods that worked well for me when learning content in school.

I firmly believe that every student can succeed in a subject if they invest enough time into learning it and if the concepts are explained to them well. When I am working with a new student I try to figure out what kinds of explanations reach them the best and incorporate those into my lesson plans. I most enjoy students who are motivated and willing to put in the effort to master what they are trying to learn.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that any student can excel in a subject if they put time and effort into understanding it. My job as a tutor is to give them the tools to succeed and adjust my explanations to fit their learning style.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

When I am assigned a new student I like to first assess if they have any holes in their foundation. Often, I've found that issues with understanding powers or fractions can affect students in upper math. I also make sure that they have good resources to study with, and suggest some if I think they don't.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by helping them establish good study habits and getting them more personally interested in the subject matter.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I keep students motivated by showing them the progress they have been making and by creating practice problems that they find interesting.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty with a skill or concept, I try to find a new way of explaining it. Explaining how a skill is used in real world applications works for some students, while visual explanations or props work well for others.
