What is your teaching philosophy?

During my many years as a student and then as a teacher, I realized that a great teacher does not just present knowledge, but what is more important is to stimulate the students.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Talk with the student, know about her/his need and learn the student's learning style, and ask how the student wants me to help.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Involve him or her more in their study, and facilitate instead of showing the student how to do it directly. Ask more questions like, “what do you think?” or “how will you do it?”

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Learn his/her learning style, help step by step, and use different methods.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Find out the student's strengths and weaknesses are, and help him to improve using the way that he /she can easily adapt to.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Let them tell me what challenge they have and what is bothering them, and then give them some help so that they can work it out by themselves and so that they gain confidence.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

To facilitate them to find the answer by themselves rather than showing the answer directly.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Ask them questions, check their work.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

For example, if they don't understand concepts, I will work more on concepts; if they are not good at math, I will focus more on math; if they just lack confidence in doing it by themselves, I will encourage them by giving them more positive comment.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

The textbook, problems, PowerPoints.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I read with the students, and ask questions to help them to understand.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I give them problems, and see if they can solve the problems or not. Ask them questions, let them repeat what you said.
