Certified Tutor

There is an "A-ha" moment for everyone. I have been tutoring for 15 years and I have truly enjoyed helping a person overcome obstacles to learning. I am dedicated to finding the key that unlocks a person's potential.

I attended the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University where I completed a Bachelor of Music Education and Saxophone Performance in 2000. After several years of military service and teaching, I completed a Master of Science in Anatomy and Clinical Health Science from the University of Delaware in 2014.

I have tutored basic math, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus, as well as anatomy and physiology. My philosophy of teaching is to constantly seek to connect with the student at a level of familiarity and comfort. Each person has a unique learning style as well as life experiences that can be related to when learning material.

My hobbies include: golf, tennis, hiking, chess, performing as a jazz and classical musician.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Each person has an optimal learning style, whether it's visual, auditory, or other. The key is to find a way to connect.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I like to find out what a person's interests are, and try to make teaching relevant to those things that a person is already comfortable with.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Once a student has gotten the ball rolling, I gradually change my instruction from directing to cueing.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help a student set goals and see the light at the end of the tunnel.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Once again, I communicate with a person at his/her optimal learning style and try to make concepts relevant to his/her daily life.
