I am a 20 year old Temple University Sophomore Biological Anthropology major. I have taken 3 semesters of college level math including algebra and calculus as well as three years of german in high school and have lived and worked in Berlin during the summer of 2014 and 2015. I grew up in a Bucks County tutoring and babysitting my adolescent neighbors in math and reading. I have been called a great friend and great influence for the children I've spent time with. I have taught my american friends practical german and I have taught my german friends practical english. Having lived in Germany for several months I have a very useful understanding for the language and how to communicate casually and confidently in day to day situations. I am friendly, patient and genuinely interested in sharing ideas/knowledge with the people I meet. I am most competent in early math up through algebra, and german language studies. I am happy to tutor anyone of any age in anything I am capable of :)

What is your teaching philosophy?

Practice makes perfect!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get to know each other, familiarize ourselves, and decide what method of teaching will be most effective.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Motivate them.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Setting goals, both long-term and short.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Explain the concept in different ways, going over each step until it begins to make sense.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Sound out each word and make comparisons using synonyms for words they do not understand.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Thoroughness and practice. Have step-by-step walkthroughs, and then practice problems until the concept comes naturally.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Set goals, maybe small rewards. Try to relate the topic to something they are interested in.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Practice problems. Have them walk me through the steps to demonstrate their understanding.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Positive reinforcement and praise.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Speaking with them about what they struggle with and what they don't like to do.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Being flexible and patient. Fitting to the student's needs to make learning as comfortable for them as possible.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Handouts with explanations of the concepts and practice problems. A highlighter to highlight important ideas. Flashcards and learning games for language. Sometimes, a small whiteboard for doing math problems.
