Certified Tutor

I recently graduated with a Master of Arts in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Cincinnati.

As a graduate teaching assistant, I taught English composition for two years. Through leading class discussions and working with students one-on-one, I learned the importance of empathizing with students and building relationships founded on respect. One of my main goals as a teacher is to help students develop an intelligible and personal voice that reflects their unique space in the world and to show that writing can be useful on a personal and professional level.

Although my master's degree is in English, my primary area of study in graduate school was creative writing, and from my experience working and discussing my work in graduate workshops, I have learned that effective writers, whether academic or creative, are invested in their topics. As a teacher, I help students create and sustain personal interest in their writing, which is half the battle in writing authentic and persuasive prose.

I have learned as a writer and teacher of writing that writers have to invest time in reading, and I have taken numerous literature classes from romantic literature to contemporary fiction. Knowing how to talk about literature in an academic setting is a crucial part of being successful in college, and I can help students enter into academic discourse. Finding enjoyment in conversing about literature and writing is why I tutor. However, I also understand the importance of English mechanics, and over the years I have learned effective ways to teach grammar.

I look forward to hearing from prospective students and beginning a conversation with them about essay writing, grammar and mechanics, and English literature.
