Tamara: Brookfield tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a Columbia University alumna, having received my Bachelors of Science in Environmental Engineering.
I had the opportunity to tutor students of all ages in New York City while working towards my undergraduate degree. I have experience helping students of all ages with homework, developing foundational skills, preparing for school exams and standardized tests, and enhancing reading & writing skills. During that time, I also ran an English as a Second Language education program for adults looking to improve their language skills.
Currently, I am a middle school teacher specializing in work with English language learners, and am working towards my teacher certification with a concentration in TESOL.
Stemming from my education and experience, I am deeply interested in environmental science and teaching English. Additionally, I am passionate about test preparation and developing successful writing skills for tests and college applications. Through a variety of strategies and motivational techniques, any academic challenge can be turned into a fun and meaningful learning experience!
I am a firm believer in creating a comfortable learning environment that encourages a student to achieve his or her highest potential. Students of all ages deserve quality education opportunities, and I believe that tutoring is a key stepping-stone to success.
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, hiking, Bikram Yoga, sightseeing around New York, and spending time with my dog. I have a very extroverted personality and love meeting new people, particularly those who share common interests!

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is that all learners are able to succeed; it's just a matter of how. Everyone is different, therefore, we don't always learn and understand the same way. My goal as a teacher is to make sure that each individual learns in a way that is understandable to the individual, making it a unique and meaningful experience.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
When I meet a student for the first time, I think it's important to get to know the student and their expectations. This lets me better understand how I am able to help them in achieving their goals. We talk about school interests, personal interests, strengths, weaknesses, and what they're looking to get out of the tutoring experience. Then, I can explain how I envision the tutoring relationship to be so that the student is always comfortable and is always learning.
