Tutoring review by Emily in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
Today's focus was mostly on math. We worked on plotting points on a graph to find the linear equation. I also introduced the topic of a slope and how to find the slope using two ordered pairs. She was able to grasp the concept, but struggled a bit when the slope was zero and the pair was (2,-7), which would be a horizontal line across the y-axis at y=-7. After some explanation, she was able to understand why it was a horizontal line, as opposed to a vertical line through x=2.

Tutoring review by Kelsey in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
Today we reviewed for the student's exam. Her class is currently working on inferences for means and we talked about hypothesis tests for 1 or 2 sample t tests, proportion tests, and paired tests. We talked about the steps to go through to narrow down which test is appropriate and which calculator programs she should use. Most of our review was conceptual, including 1 versus 2 tails, what a p-value represents and how to correctly write hypotheses. We also did a formula review as well. The student aced her last exam and if she keeps up the hard work I think she will ace this one too!

Tutoring review by Julia in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
The student finished a 10-question quiz in her online math course. This was an end-of-course extra credit and summative quiz covering: solving algebraic equations, functions, and graphs. The student learned how to solve equations for a variable by "undoing" terms in order to get x by itself. Inverse operations "undo" each other: addition and subtraction are inverses; multiplication and division are inverses. She learned to work vertically, to keep track of positive and negative numbers, and to check her answer. She is very skilled with positive and negative numbers. The score for this quiz was 100%. Currently her grade in the math course is 77%, a very good improvement! She is thrilled to be getting higher grades and has nearly completed the course.

Tutoring review by Jonathan in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
It was a pleasure to meet this student today. Today we worked on solving systems of equations - up to 3 unknowns. We went over how to solve them using matrix row reduction in a graphing calculator. We also worked on word problems - how to convert them into systems of equations. She had some trouble doing this - especially the problems that have equations with both value and quantity. We tried to compare this process to the more intuitive way that people calculate value and quantity with respect to money (such as how much money do you have if you have five $5 bills). I gave her my email address - she's more than welcome to ask me questions anytime.

Tutoring review by Dawn in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY
The student has started on logarithmic functions. I went over the entire first lesson in the textbook (the teacher has only gone over the first bullet point). The student very easily completed his homework going from an exponential function to a logarithmic function and from a logarithmic function to an exponential function. After that we continued reviewing the past chapters. We started looking at chapter three - specifically factoring equations. At first he needed to be reminded on how to factor quadratic equations but he quickly picked it up and was able to factor problems with ease.

The student and I worked on reviewing for his final exam tonight, practicing equation solving, fraction arithmetic, and absolute value. He seemed to struggle to remember some of the material, but on the whole he picked up my explanations well.
