Tutoring review by Julia in Carlsbad, CA
Today we continued study in Unit 10 Statistics in the home school course. Lesson 12 on Sampling Strategies taught 4 ways to sample: simple (true random), stratified (sampling groups), systematic (sample every 10th, for example), and convenient (sample what is easiest). The opening quiz reviewed pentagon, perimeter, and circumference. The student answered with 100% correct answers, needing help in recalling the formula from a list, encouragement to write everything down, and use algebraic methods to solve for diameter given circumference. He fully remembers the definitions and calculations to go from diameter to radius. He continues to show deep understanding and recall of how to solve algebraic equations. Sampling as a way to count large populations was discussed. He scored 80% on the Lesson 12 Checkpoint quiz, showed good understanding of sampling. Lesson 13 on Statistical Claims was easy for him because it is based in common sense and real-world examples. This lesson included review of graphs where he recalled circle graphs and how to use them. I reminded him that to make the graph we use 360 degrees for a circle. He scored 100% on the opening Skills Update review, having mastered finding the area of a circle and volume of a cylinder -- he uses a formula list and his calculator. Lesson 13 Checkpoint quiz score was 80% where he was able to see how graphs can be misleading if the scales are manipulated. He has a strong vocabulary and readily understood the terms "vertical, horizontal, claim, bias, sample." Working with him is a pleasure and we have developed a rapport. He is a quick learner with excellent foundational knowledge.

Tutoring review by Liban in Carlsbad, CA
Today we went over quadratics. We first reviewed how to extract graphical information from a quadratic equation. I showed him how most of the info can be found by just getting the vertex. I showed him several methods of getting the vertex which he grasped quickly and was able to apply with no trouble. We then reviewed solving systems of equation. The student had trouble understanding the difference between elimination and substitution until I presented my review. I then assigned him several problems which he performed flawlessly.

Today the student and I worked on his homework, they started a new concept, solving using the quadratic equation. We spent the entire time working and graphing out the homework questions but he was able to complete it by the time our session ended.

The student and I spent the session working on Spanish and biology. He apparently did badly on a Spanish test a few weeks ago so we prepared thoroughly for the oral to help bring up his semester grade. We also reviewed again for his genetics test.

He is currently reading Los Ojos De Carmen by Veronica Moscoso. In today's session we reviewed chapters 7 through 9. We read them together and summarized the chapters. He was able to give me a summary about the beginning of the book as a means of comprehension, and while reading the chapters we stopped to discuss unknown words. We also stopped and did comprehension checks. He had some homework assigned with the reading, and we were able to complete the homework based on his comprehension of the reading. He will contact me the next time he needs help.
