We worked on the conservation of energy. We worked on problems where energy was transferred from one form to another. This made the student work with gravitational potential energy, elastic potential energy, and kinetic energy. We set up the conservation of energy using. Ei=Ef and replacing each E with the appropriate energies. She started to gain a much better understanding of this concept now.

Today, the student and I went over Algebra for his test on Thursday. This was mostly focusing on polynomials and the different ways to solve and apply the variables. When the student gets going on a problem, he really is intent on finding the answer. I wrote out an outline that would assist with his overall organization. He is able to do the steps, but needs to be prompted to do them because he does not always know when a certain step should happen. So I wrote out a comprehensive list of steps to check for, which worked for him when he practiced using it. He will continue practicing with the checklist until the steps to solve the problems are second nature for him.

The student and I spent most of the session working through his homework on plotting and graphing and using the measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) to describe data sets. This was mostly review for him from previous school years, but it was a good opportunity to remind him of some of the key differences between various ways of representing data. We worked on problems with box and whisker plots, bar graphs, scatterplots, and histograms. He needed to ask a few clarifying questions about how to set up each graph, but overall he knew what he was doing. We then talked a little about the new material he was learning in class, namely using the Pythagorean Theorem. He had a complete understanding of the concept, but he could use more practice working with the formula to solve for unknowns. As he learns more about this in class, I think he'll get more confident using these ideas.

Today we worked on the review for the Pre-Calculus final exam the student has on Friday. We worked on solving trig equations, verifying trig identities, word problems involving trig functions, unit circle, solving triangles, law of sines and cosines etc. I will be sending an additional worksheet to him tonight so that he can practice the concepts he needs to work on. I have left two practice tests with him to look at and practice before the final.

We worked on systems of equations, primarily how to solve them by graphing. We also worked with her calculator so she can start using this to check her work and help save her time. She did very well with this. She was a little rusty with graphing equations since it has been so long since she learned how to do them last year, but was able to get right back into them very well. We finished by reviewing a certain type of systems of equations problems.
