Tutoring review by Ron Ron in Highland Village, TX
This was the first day of school. Since the last session, I was forwarded materials for the algebra curriculum, which will be tested in January. Today's session was based on the first portion of the curriculum, including working with real numbers, evaluating expressions with inequalities, and simplifying square roots. We reviewed core concepts for each topic, followed by working through various sample problems. The student did well with evaluating expressions with inequalities using real numbers. We had more trouble with manipulating square roots. We honed in on converting between square roots, variables, and squares. We also reviewed simplifying numbers into prime numbers and using this to help simplify square roots. I encouraged her throughout the session to talk out her math processes and write everything down to help everything make as much sense as possible. We recapped the basics of the concepts we covered today, and I gave her a sample square root variable equation to sub in her choice of numbers to work on and go over for next time.

This session involved some test preparation. We covered some areas that we touched on in last session. I answered specific questions from student on price elasticity of demand, the midpoint formula, and absolute elasticity. She continues to have a good attitude toward her work and only seems to need reinforcement in certain areas of mathematical calculations. She is going to contact me to set up her next session after she gets her next assignment.

The student has a test tomorrow on using integrals. We reviewed setting up integrals to find: areas/volumes by slices, revolving about an axis or specified line to find volumes whose cross-sections include circles, rectangles or rings; finding volume of square cross-sections perpendicular to an axis; finding arc length of a curve; converting rectangular to polar coordinates or polar to rectangular coordinates; and finding area or arc length in polar coordinates. She felt more confident at the end of our session about her upcoming exam.

The student and I worked on some introductory concepts of algebra - variables, combining like terms, and the distributive property. He was doing quite well. He is able to remember things very well. He will practice what we worked on, as well as more preliminary skills before our next session.

Today the student worked on her math homework, which was focused on dividing positive and negative integers. She is doing great at this; she can consistently identify correctly if an answer is going to be positive or negative. She seemed uncertain about converting between Celsius and Fahrenheit, but it seemed that maybe she hadn't actually learned that in class, and we were looking at the wrong section in her math book. Next time, I will work with her on recognizing when she's made an arithmetic mistake and when she needs to write the problem out long-hand instead of just doing it in her head. Other than that, she's doing very well. She definitely has a good understanding of the concepts.

The extra 2 hour session definitely helped with the student. She seems much more confident in her math skills, and feels she will do well (she says "great") on her test tomorrow. I am very proud of the hard work she has put into practicing and learning these skills.
