The student and I met today to work on strategies for the Writing section of the ACT and to take a Reading practice test. We started with the Writing portion and uncovered a few things. Because she is such an open-minded and inquisitive person, she has a hard time taking a side on the prompts, making it difficult for her to craft thesis statements. Because she has a difficult time centering her argument, it then becomes difficult for her to provide the right sorts of specifics in her answer. We'll need to continue working on this portion to make sure that she can produce the sort of essay expected by ACT graders. I'm treading carefully here because I do not want to squash her tendencies for open-minded analysis. After that, the Reading portion went quite well.

Tutoring review by Hamid in Coral Springs, FL
The student and I had a very positive session. The new section she is focused on deals with radicals/roots and how they relate with exponents. From our discussion today, some of her previous understanding or even knowledge of polynomials (in particular division of polynomials) was lacking. First we worked out her problems dealing with polynomial relationships and exponents. Then we reviewed long division and synthetic division for polynomials. And finally we discussed roots and their relationship to exponents. She stayed enthusiastic and focused the entire time.

Tutoring review by Carol in Coral Springs, FL
I worked with the student on multiplication using partial products; we completed 10 problems from homework. Then, we worked on a reading assignment that worked on main characters and plot from the story of the week. He continues to improve on writing complete sentences and thinking about what he wants to write before he does so that the sentences make sense. We completed the session with a review of science terms.
