Tutoring review by Amanda in Alabama
The student and I worked on sight words 'is,' 'are,' and 'the.' We began by reading the word, spelling the word, and then placing the word in his notebook. He also practiced blending onset and the rime -ig. He dictated sentences, and I wrote the words down on sentence strips. First, I assembled and read the sentences with him, then I mixed up the words, and he had to assemble the words independently. I noticed he sometimes mixes up letter names and sounds in English with Spanish names and sounds, so we then did a brief alphabet activity where he had to say the alphabet and place the picture cards in the correct order of the alphabet. After the alphabet activity, we reviewed the sight words by using wiki sticks to make the sight words. We ended our session by playing a game of hangman, using the new sight words learned in today's session and the other sight words that were taught in previous sessions.

The student continues to make great progress. She tells me she got 100% on her most recent AR test. We continued with the next episode in the series we are reading on Atlantis, and also worked on a reading comprehension exercise. She has two assignments to finish up, which she will do this week. I will assess her progress in that for next week.

The student and I covered vector addition in component form and resultant force calculations. We also reviewed the position-velocity-acceleration plot relationships. She is adjusting to the practiced mindset of breaking problems into parts and representing her answer in the correct form. It seems like she has been performing well in physics relative to her peers.

We worked through the student's Chapter 3.2 problem set. We covered the different methods of how to solve quadratic equations and how to decide which method to use. She was prepared and worked hard for the whole session.

The student and I continued our study of the first stages of algebra. We solved equations with a single variable knowing the equation's final value. We approached this with the balancing equation technique. He still needs more practice, but he is starting to commit the key concepts to memory. This is a good start.
