Recent Denton Tutoring Session Notes
For today's session, they wanted to try splitting up the tutoring time and working with both students individually for 45 minutes each. It was helpful for each of them to get individualized help because while they are both in the same class, they are at different levels. Student A wanted more help in graphing trigonometric functions using the function's period, amplitude, and mid line. Student B wanted more help on material that Student A and I reviewed last week. This material was on finding values of the trig functions at different angles using triangles. They need someone to slowly explain how to do it and they need to see many examples before attempting problems on their own.

The student is getting much better at solving algebra equations. He understands the techniques much better than he did a month ago. He definitely knows the correct way to add negative and positive numbers together.

This was my first session with the student. She had a test the following morning, and we worked on her test review questions. We worked on system of equations problems, algebraic word problems, and profit/loss equation problems. The student struggled most with formatting algebraic expressions from word problems but after much review, she began to understand and grasp the translation easier. I also showed her some test skills pertaining to quickly writing algebraic expressions and using context clues to evaluate the problems.

The student and I worked on an expository essay he was writing about his favorite high school class, world history. During the session he successfully rewrote his rough draft and has a much more polished draft complete. We focused on writing strong paragraphs with main ideas, supporting sentences, and a concluding sentence. We emphasized the need for specific details and worked on reducing wordiness. His writing skills have improved since I started working with him.

The student and I we went over equilibrium, kinetics, and acid and base practice problems from SAT II Chemistry guides. He will need to be solid on this very important and high-yield content prior to his test. We will go over electrochemistry tomorrow, another topic that he says he is quite weak in.

The student and I worked on related rates today. He had not understood his teacher's explanation of the process, but he said that my demonstrations helped him tremendously. Overall, his biggest weak point on related rates was remembering the assorted algebra/geometry/trig formulas on which the problems are based.
