Tutoring review by Brian in Long Island City, NY
The material this week was the Pythagorean theorem and special Pythagorean triangles. The student was able to use the Pythagorean theorem to determine if a triangle is acute, right, or obtuse. The student was able to complete her homework, solving problems to find the third side of a triangle, with some help. She was usually able to set up the appropriate equation. The student will continue to review the 45-45-90 and 30-60-90 triangles and memorize a list of Pythagorean triplets assigned by her teacher. She will have a test next week on these subjects, so I encouraged her to complete the unassigned practice problems to improve her algebra.

We continued to work on graphing parabolas and completing the square. The student solved the derivation of the quadratic equation very well, which shows that she understand the concepts of completing the square. We have gone over a lot of information very quickly, but she is definitely sufficiently able to solve factoring problems and completing the square problems when prompted. She very quickly learned and was able to apply graphing rules for parabolas. This is the most important thing for graphing, so we will continue working on this, but her quick learning of these concepts shows that we will be able to continue progressing through concepts quickly.

We went over a couple of chemistry concepts to review for the student's upcoming test as well as problems dealing with radicals for algebra 2. For chemistry, we clarified elements/compounds/mixtures, how to determine whether an event resulted in a physical or chemical change, and balancing equations. She knew how to explain physical and chemical changes perfectly, and how to identify elements/compounds/mixtures. I gave her sample problems for balancing equations and clarified some parts of the process. She was able to accurately solve the questions after a couple of questions. For math, we went over simplifying radicals, factoring, and determining degrees of expressions. We went over radicals with real numbers, then we added variables to the mix. She just started learning about the topic, so she needs more practice but was able to realize how simplifying radicals worked. She was fine with factoring the greatest common factor already, and we discussed what was upcoming in this unit.

The student and I worked on finding slope based on two given coordinate pairs. In an attempt to cut down on her chattiness and restlessness, I timed her as she did each problem and had her cross them off as she worked. This seemed to work to some extent, though I was unable to cut down on the chattiness altogether. At the end of our session, I gave her a math riddle that she enjoyed solving. For next session, I'll bring more riddles and have her attempt to solve them every few problems or so in order to keep her interested and engaged.

The student is taking her test on Monday. She had a list of topics she had questions on, so I went through them with her. I had her do some practice problems as well. Finally, I helped her set up word problems.
