We finished the student's chapter 6 lessons and quizzes. At this point the only items left for her to complete are the previous unit tests from chapter 4 and chapter 6. We also have to complete the study island from chapter 6. Once those items are complete, her current grade will be above a 90. She will also have to prepare for the semester exam.

Tutoring review by Tamika in Miramar, FL
We discussed, in depth, The Boy in the Striped Pajamas. The student's teacher indicated that the class will be tested on this book during the first week of school. He did the first half of the report for this book. I edited his latest draft of his Sounder book report, and asked that he have the final draft ready for Friday.

Tutoring review by Anna in Miramar, FL
The student had a few questions in algebra, so we worked through some of her homework together. I pointed out similarities between the different types of problems and set her up to finish the assignment on her own once she had a feel for the problems' structures. Although the different methods for visualizing algebraic expressions can be tedious, adding like terms and signed numbers has been a struggle for her, so I'm glad she'll have diverse tools at her disposal for conceptualizing what's going on. We turned to the ISEE after an hour of math, and the student took a middle level reading comprehension test, scoring 28/36. We discovered a specific type of question that frequently stumps her: would the author agree/ disagree with given statements. So we talked about how to eliminate answers with extreme language and skim for key words to find the answer. She seemed to be on board with my explanations, so we'll see if she does better on these questions in the future.

Tutoring review by Elijah in Miramar, FL
Today we talked about procrastination and about the benefits of doing assignments early, such as decrease in stress, increased time for revision, and more mental and emotional energy for other pursuits. We talked about critical thinking and identified some examples of critical thinking in his everyday life. I had him do a 15 minute free write on his thoughts about the benefits of staying ahead of the game, in reference to assignments and school projects. We then did an exercise on identifying sentence elements: nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. We also identified parts of speech in sentences: subjects, verbs, objects, etc. I gave him a short essay on the history of a city, with two research questions and a critical thinking short essay question. Next session he'll bring his laptop and we'll get started with editing in Word and digital note-taking and organization programs for students.
