Today we discussed genetic engineering and different techniques such as recombinant DNA and artificial selection. She was having the most difficulty with understanding the process of recombinant DNA as well as the role of the restriction enzymes, however she understood this concept after I used a different scenario to explain it to her. We also completed a lab assignment on recombinant DNA. Overall the session was successful, and she understands this material much better.

Today we went over the standard deviation as well as the mean. The SD is a new concept so we took a long time covering it. We also went over the computation of Q1, Q2 and Q3 as well as IQR in order to make box plots. We took an example and worked through it together. She did well on the box plot. We also discussed the basics of exponents and the square root. We went over some simple relationships and talked about the how variance and SD can be computed from one another. All in all, a really good session because the student told me she made much more progress than she expected on these concepts.

We focused on number place, value, and rounding. In this way we identified the underlined value in a number by its place: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, etc. We then demoted the value and rounded it according to the value to its right. We then completed a worksheet on this concept. We then practiced our three times table.

Today I worked with Student 1 on vocabulary and math homework. I also worked with Student 2 on a midterm.

The student and I spent this tutoring session simplifying fractions, comparing ratios, and using ratios to represent word problems. She worked very independently and did a great job with these concepts. When she got stuck, we worked on finding a strategy to solve the problem. She identified that she is most comfortable when working with ratios as fractions and converted any word problem or differently formatted ratio into a fraction. She also said that she likes to practice problems independently and talk through the ones she gets stuck on.

I made up functions and had the student identify what form they were in, the line of symmetry, the vertex, the y-intercept, the mirror point, and two other points for each.
