Spanish 2 Tutoring FAQ
Spanish 1 provides and introduction and overview of the beautiful language of Spanish. Spanish 2 increases the difficulty and complexity of the material, while expecting students to continue to make use of the elementary knowledge they gained in Spanish 1. Students are introduced to more tenses and are expected to differentiate between their proper usages. While many of the verbs introduced in Spanish 1 follow the rules of conjugation that students concurrently learn, Spanish 2 begins to present frequently used words that don't follow these patterns and must be memorized individually. Students continue to increase their Spanish vocabulary as well. All of the words they learned in Spanish 1 are still fair game and can appear on homework, quizzes, and tests.
Along with the expansion of student's skills in these various areas, they are expected to have more involved conversations. No longer are conversations simple exchanges of common phrases that often follow rigid formats. Students are expected to express their own opinions about subjects with confidence, if not ease, in a foreign language. Reading and writing skills are expected to follow suit and to develop more complexity and depth. Students are expected to being speaking and writing as naturally in Spanish as they do in their native language. While they aren't expected to be fluent, they will need greater proficiency than in the previous course.
Students who struggled in Spanish 1, or consider their foundational knowledge shaky, can find Spanish 2 even more challenging, as the class is notably sequential. Those who wish to increase their skill in Spanish may want to consider working with a personal Spanish tutor. Varsity Tutors can help students connect with experienced Spanish tutors anywhere in the United States. Highly qualified tutors have experience making the language more accessible at every point along the path to language acquisition.
Personal Spanish tutoring allows students to have the full attention of their instructor. Questions can be answered as they arise and students are able to receive immediate feedback on their work. This ensures emergent misunderstandings will be cut off before they become bad habits. Tutors take the time to get to know their students in order to fully understand the mastery of the language thus far. Strengths and weaknesses are considered, as is the personal learning style of each student. With this information, tutors are able to design a learning plan that addresses the skills and concepts individual students most need help with. Students are encouraged to work through the material at their own pace and spend as much or as little time on each topic as they need to fully understand and master the concept. An experienced tutor can provide support and guidance every step of the way.
Working with a personal Spanish tutor also allows the student to be in control of scheduling their own sessions. This can be very important for students who are already feeling overwhelmed with a challenging course and the hectic scheduling demands of school, family, and work. Tutors want to reduce the stress students are experiencing and are available to meet in a variety of locations, including in the student's home, at a school campus, a local coffee shop, or a nearby library. Sessions can be held during the day, in the evening, or on weekends depending on student availability. The Varsity Tutors live learning platform allows students to meet with a private tutor either in person or face-to-face online. This gives them the flexibility to meet with their tutor at the time and location of their choice.
One of the most important jobs of a tutor is creating a comfortable learning environment for the student in which he or she can excel in their studies. The individualized lesson plans, personal attention, and scheduling flexibility guarantee students will be able to create a learning environment that will help them reach their full academic potential. Contact Varsity Tutors today for more information on how to connect with a personal Spanish 2 tutor.

Recent Spanish 2 Tutoring Session Notes
Today was our first session, and the student is beginning a summer online course. We reviewed furniture vocabulary and began discussing travel vocabulary. He learned the subjunctive tense and was able to grasp the main idea quickly. We discussed creating flashcards to review vocabulary. He knows what pages to finish studying before he takes the Unit 1 quiz on Friday.
We went through some of the student's Spanish notebook and I quizzed her on food and place vocab words, and held short dialogues with her to practice. I also explained the difference between "el Papa" and "la papa"-- the Pope vs. potatoes!
Today, we finished up with formal commands and started the present subjunctive. The student was quick to understand the concepts and practiced a lot online. Very productive. We are hoping to finish up before she goes to school.
We talked about object pronouns and a little bit about reflexive pronouns and why they are similar. Today was productive because the student was able to review direct and indirect pronouns and their uses within sentence structure. We practiced with exercises from both his textbook and other materials. He has notecards that include details about using direct and indirect pronouns.
Initial session today with the student went well. It appears that he needs a good foundation regarding how to conjugate verbs and also gain experience in attaching the correct verb conjugation with the correct pronoun (tu....eres /you....are). We came up with a graphic way to remember the endings so that appeared to be a good start. We did a little bit of writing, oral, and discussion regarding some simple sentences that incorporated the verbs, and some of the material that he learned last year in Spanish 1, and discussed the reasoning behind the sentences.
Review of some basic Spanish I vocabulary and regular verb conjugation
Went over the difference between ser and estar and question words (que, como, quien, cual, etc.)
Practiced English-Spanish and Spanish-English translations and tweaking pronunciation
