Calgary SAT Subject Tests Tutoring FAQ
SAT Subject Tests, required by some colleges, are a great way to demonstrate your academic abilities on your college applications. Varsity Tutors can help you connect with private tutors who will custom-tailor their assistance to whichever SAT Subject Test you are preparing to take. Students usually choose to take subject tests in their strongest academic areas. SAT Subject Test tutoring focuses on combining your previous knowledge of a chosen subject with test-taking techniques that can help you do your personal best on test day, augmenting your current level of mastery with proven techniques and strategies to translate your content knowledge into the testing environment. Whether you are taking one subject test or three, Varsity Tutors can help you connect with a highly qualified tutor dedicated to helping you gain the skills and knowledge you need to succeed on your chosen exam.
Your tutor can first establish where you most need help in understanding the material that will be covered on your specific SAT Subject Test. He or she can explain concepts, break down problems, and teach you using methods tailored to how you learn best. Tutors are dedicated to developing customized learning plans specific to your learning preferences, needs, and time constraints. Along with helping you master all of the topics covered on your SAT Subject Test, your tutor can also teach you test-taking strategies specific to your particular test. These strategies can be reinforced through in-session exercises and homework up until the time that you take your exam.
One area your private tutor can be especially helpful in is helping you develop effective time management skills. As they have taken the SAT Subject Tests before, they can give you insight into what to expect on test day. They can give you an idea as to what types of questions you can expect and how much time you should be taking on each question. There is nothing more frustrating than not being able to finish an exam because you ran out of time. A private tutor can make sure that you are completely familiar with the material so that you can make the most of your time while taking your exam.
SAT Subject Test tutoring is about helping you develop as a test-taker and as a student. Tutors are deeply invested in your academic success, and want to help you build your college resume in a way that best represents your academic capabilities and interests. SAT Subject Test tutoring typically begins several weeks before the test so that you have enough time to hone your test-taking skills, become comfortable with test materials and question types, and practice executing test-taking strategies efficiently. Your tutor can listen and respond to your concerns, troubleshoot any problems that arise, and adjust his or her tutoring approach when appropriate. Private tutoring is designed to revolve around you and your needs, allowing flexibility and adaptability that cannot be found in a classroom.
Tutors' hours are flexible, so whether you would prefer to meet on a weekend or a weekday is up to you. Furthermore, your SAT Subject Test tutoring can take place at the location that best suits your needs. Recent Calgary SAT Subject Tests Tutoring Session Notes
Today was the first session with the student. We discussed her strategy for studying since she has a little less than 3 weeks until the exam (10/5). She has a good background in Biology and we spent this session reviewing important concepts. We also discussed the format of the exam and some useful tips when taking the test. She feels more comfortable taking the SAT Biology (E), given her background, and I agree with this decision. We agreed that she will spend the next few days studying her weakest areas in order to achieve a well-rounded grasp of the content. We will be meeting again on Friday 9/20. Overall, it was a great first session.
The student is taking the SAT Bio test in early November and has been having trouble achieving the scores she wants on practice tests. We began by going over test taking strategies, specifically those relevant to the SAT IIs, such as when to skip a problem and when to put down an answer, even if you aren't sure. She had questions about mitosis vs meiosis, the renal system, blood types, and DNA replication. We went over the questions that she got wrong on her most recent test. For the next session she wants to go over genetic dominance, Hardy-Weinberg equations, and evolution.
We went over a biology SAT prep test that the student had taken and discussed some of the problem areas that the student was having in both biology and chemistry. We had a frank discussion about how seriously the student has been taking studying for this test so far before setting up a schedule for exactly how he's going to use the next two weeks before he has to face the real test. I am now holding him accountable for reporting to me every night with a summary of and questions about the material he's studied.
The student and I did some preliminary work on the SAT Biology. We reviewed some of the basic information about the test. We also reviewed some of the material she has already covered in class. We specifically reviewed the cell cycle and the process of cell division in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, as well as the flow of blood through the heart and lungs; both topics she said she had not understood thoroughly. She seemed to do very well with the material.
The student and I began her preparation for the SAT II Subject test coming up in May. First, we discussed the outline of the test and how she needs to decide if she would like to take the ecological of molecular emphasis of the biology test. We went over some practice questions, and I ended by encouraging her to take a diagnostic test to see how she might score on test day.
We covered a set of practice questions around biochemistry, including carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. We also discussed some test prep strategies for breaking down unfamiliar words and terms. The student is doing really well in applying the strong foundation from what she's covering in class to preparing for the SAT II.
