I am a graduate of the University of North Texas, where I received my Bachelor of Business Administration with a focus in Finance and Financial Services. Upon graduation, I began working in the mortgage industry as a Loan Officer and later as a Mortgage Broker. After a successful career in the Finance Industry, I decided to pursue my other passion in Computer Science, and began working for Fortune 500 companies such as Dell and IBM as a Network Software Engineer. I should mention that I have my certifications in A+, Network+, CompTIA IT Operations Specialist CIOS Stackable, MCP, IBM AIX, and AWS Cloud Practitioner and AWS Solutions Architect Associate . A few years later, I caught the travel bug and decided that I wanted to travel and teach English, so I obtained my TESL Certification from Oxford Seminars at the University of St. Edwards in Austin, Texas and moved to Taiwan where I began my ESL teaching career, where I taught ages 7 to 22 years old. During my time in Taiwan, I was awarded a scholarship for a 1-year Intensive Mandarin course. In addition to Taiwan, I have lived and worked in Guatemala, Mexico, Costa Rica, and Peru, and I am fluent in Spanish. While I tutor a broad range of subjects, my primary focus is on professional certifications such as A+, Network+, AWS; however, I also help prepare for students with TOEFL and SAT entrance exams, as well as helping foreign business professionals improve their Business and Legal English. I am also a Business and Marketing Strategist and Consultant with over 15 years of experience. I am passionate about helping students achieve the success they desire and helping them overcome the barriers that prevent them from having that success. In my experience, success is determined not by what talents or skills you may have, but how much time and effort you are willing to put into mastering those desired skills. As stated by the "10,000 Hour Rule" by Malcolm Gladwell, only after you have dedicated yourself to 10,000 hours of work towards a specific skill can you become a master at it. In my experience, I find this to be true with myself and with my students. Outside of teaching, I practice meditation, yoga, and exercise daily as a self-discipline. I also enjoy cooking, traveling, reading, writing, learning new languages, nature hikes, waterfalls, Permaculture, Finance/Investing/Cryptocurrency, and taking care of my two beautiful dogs. I am focused constant personal development and I am dedicated towards constant self-improvement. If you are ready to take the steps towards improving your own personal development to achieve the success you desire, schedule a class today and I will help you on your path to success.

I am a University of Texas student pursuing a BSA in Mathematics, I am passionate about being a leader and a mentor, I love working with people! I was an orientation advisor for two summers, where I gave students support and advice when it came to class preparation and registration. This allowed me to pass my knowledge of mathematics classes and the college class experience overall to new students. I also love mathematics because it allows me to do work using a problem-solving approach and develop a great sense of logic. I am really interested in applied mathematics, using math for real-world situations! Subjects I feel very strongly about are discrete mathematics, algebra, linear algebra. My tutoring philosophy is to help students help themselves, as this will boost their motivation and confidence, and to be a friend to them as well as a mentor. Also if for some reason my internet is choppy or crashes in our session early on, I will try to make sure you get refunded!

Learning occurs when a student is in a safe, comfortable environment where they feel respected and engaged. As a teacher, I pride myself on ensuring that every student in my classroom feels like they have a voice, and that their voice is important. A student should never feel ashamed or afraid to express their opinion. When I teach, I start with a passionate approach to the material. I love Language Arts and strive to garner as much knowledge about the material as I can so that I can present true and credible information to my students. I then determine the most exciting way to convey the material so that each student is engaged. I learn as much as I can about the student's interests, passions, and hobbies, so that I can create analogies to their lives and impart the information in such a way that they can apply it to what they already know and care about. I believe that this method contributes to long term retention. My goal is, not only for my class to do well on standardized exams, but to carry a lifelong passion for learning and for the material that I've presented them. I feel an enormous sense of pride when I know that I've made a difference in a student's life. I want my students to see the importance of education and value in the betterment of themselves and their community.I believe that test scores don't tell the entire story of a student's progress, but an overview of the student as a whole is important to measure learning. How has the student progressed in the classroom? Have they shown a new interest in the subject? Have they volunteered more information about themselves over the course of a semester? Are they willing to participate in class discussion, whereas, before they were quiet? These are all questions I ask myself and measures I use to determine if I am teaching effectively. I believe in always working to become a better teacher and person. Therefore, I am always measuring my progress as well as the student's, and asking myself what I can do to become better at my job. One of the best ways for me to be a better teacher is to learn from my students.I embrace technology in my classroom and want the students to be excited about Language Arts as it applies to the world in which they operate. Social Media, blogging, and the internet in general are important spheres for education, and I like to make a connection to technology and the subject matter in which I'm teaching so that students are excited to see the application.

Enabling students to grasp the foundational knowledge and skills that they will use for the rest of their lives is a wonderful gift. Good education is, in my belief, the single most important thing we can pass on to the younger generation. I am very motivated to equip young minds to learn more about the academic world, introducing them to Mathematics, English, and Science. Equally important to convey are life skills including treating others with respect, working in teams, and learning how to be fit and healthy. My experience tutoring is rooted in anywhere from elementary to college-aged students. Through the RISE for Success Program at my undergraduate institution, I have been able to gain an adept understanding of how many college students learn material. Through various tutoring opportunity as a team leader during summer camp I have also developed several methods for tutoring/teaching new material to student ages 10-17. Each of these experiences has revealed that no two students learn exactly the same and that each lesson must essentially be catered to the specific student and subject. As a medical student, I am a firm believer that an essential part of patient care is quality patient education. In school, more education translates into better opportunities, and in life, education provides greater control over ones circumstances. Meaningful patient education can have a parallel effect. Tutoring inspires me to set my own personal goals of listening and communicating more clearly in my day-to-day interactions with the hope that one day as a practicing physician I will be able to hone these skills and thereby empower my patients to be in control of their health as well through educating them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students across Columbia's 7 school districts with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a school in Richland One, Richland Two, Lexington, or another local district, we can match them with a tutor who understands South Carolina's curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.

Your first session is all about getting to know your student's strengths, challenges, and learning style. The tutor will assess where your student stands academically, discuss specific goals (like improving a grade or preparing for a test), and create a personalized plan. This foundation helps ensure every future session is targeted and effective.

Tutors working with Columbia students are familiar with South Carolina's standards and curriculum expectations across grade levels. They tailor instruction to address gaps in foundational skills while pushing students toward mastery of grade-level content. This targeted approach helps students not just keep up, but build confidence and genuine understanding.

Math and reading comprehension are the most requested subjects for students in Columbia, particularly in elementary and middle school where foundational skills are critical. High school students frequently seek support in algebra, geometry, chemistry, and test prep for the SAT and ACT. We also work with students on writing, science, and other subjects based on individual needs.

With an average student-teacher ratio of 12.9:1 across Columbia's schools, classroom teachers often have limited time for individualized attention. Personalized 1-on-1 tutoring fills that gap by giving your student dedicated time to work through challenges, ask questions without hesitation, and learn at their own pace—something that's difficult to achieve in a traditional classroom setting.

Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions you choose. We work with families to find pricing that fits their budget, whether that's weekly sessions or intensive support during key academic periods. Contact us for a personalized quote based on your student's specific needs.

Absolutely. Tutors work with Columbia students preparing for the SAT, ACT, AP exams, and state assessments. Test prep tutoring focuses on content mastery, test-taking strategies, and building the confidence needed to perform well. Starting preparation several months in advance typically yields the best results.

Varsity Tutors connects students with tutors who have strong subject expertise and teaching experience. Tutors are vetted professionals who understand how to teach effectively and adapt to different learning styles. When you work with us, we ensure the match between tutor and student prioritizes both expertise and compatibility.
