I am a student on leave from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs, looking to study immigration and urban policy specifically. Languages are another passion of mine, I am currently studying Arabic and Spanish, but am fluent in French and Romanian as well. Working for Concordia Language Villages, as a counsellor at a French Immersion Camp, has taught me how to effectively teach French using a wide variety of methods and activities. Supporting students in creative ways was key to that job, but working as a writing coach also gave me the experience necessary to guide serious students through complex writing projects. Though my professional interests tend towards the humanities, I love to unscramble equations and help students work through Algebra and Calculus subjects as well. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, and helping students succeed in French, Math, and Writing, as well as improving standardized test scores combines my skills and interests remarkable well. Outside of academics, I love to hike and play Ultimate Frisbee.

Having struggled myself the first time I took standardized tests, I understand that even with a solid knowledge foundation tests like the ACT require a substantial amount of exam specific preparation. I am graduating in December 2017 from the University of Washington with a degree of Bachelor of Psychology. I love teaching, and I have much teaching / tutoring experience. I am passionate to teach Chinese and math. I have worked with different age groups: the preschoolers, Pre-K, elementary kids, and high school students. From these experiences, I learned a lot. I learned to use different ways to teach different age groups. For example, to the preschoolers and Pre-K kids, I would develop some games and activities in the classes, such as painting, candy counting, making own faces, looking for shapes or colors in the classes. For the elementary kids, I would ask them to read the books, to talk about the stories, use jeopardy, or to create something on their own. Of course, I would also develop some games, and sometimes I would ask them to work together or in groups to make a roleplay or do some small projects. For high school students is much easier, since they know what they need to learn and easier to understand the concepts, I would ask them to develop their own ways to learn. In the classes, I would ask all of them to participate, and also help each other to learn as well.I would also change my teaching depended on the kids' performance in classes. For example, when I taught the preschoolers and pre-K kids, once we were learning the body part in Mandarin class. I printed different styles of the body parts for them to design their own face. However, they didn't really interest in it because they were not really good at cutting. Therefore, I changed the way next time. I bought the stick online with different cute designs of body parts as well in class. The kids loved them and they learned really fast in the class. From these experiences, I learned a lot, and I hope to learn and develop more my own ways of teaching in my current and future experiences for offering better teaching to the students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, y exercising, painting, or create some DIY gifts.

I'm a PhD student in Bioengineering at the University of Washington, I recently graduated from Johns Hopkins University studying Biology with a minor in Spanish. I'm very interested in all things math and science and also tutor in Spanish and with the ACT. I live in San Francisco and would love to help out with anything of that sort. As a BOW, I was able to mentor and tutor students at local elementary schools in the Portland Metro Area from 2011-2012. From 2008-2012, I was afforded the opportunity to be an Advancement via Individual Determination (AVID) student. Through AVID, I was able to tutor my fellow peers and work with them in small groups. While I tutor a variety of subjects, I am most passionate about Math, Reading, Writing, Study Skills and Organization. I have a passion for these subjects because working with students in these areas has always yielded successful results; exceeded expectations and an improved comprehension and work ethic. I tailor my tutoring style according to each student's needs. I make sure they feel comfortable and encouraged. In high school, I struggled with tests and focusing long enough to complete lengthy readings, but I found what works for me. Now, I find great joy in helping others be able to do the same. I strive to not only assist in the education of my students but also in the empowerment. When I am not in the classroom or library, I am at the gym, in the kitchen, or spending time with my loved ones.

When students learn how to harness a difficult concept, questions are answered and new ones are discovered. I spent five summers at a summer camp devoted to social and environmental justice, working with all age groups and doing everything from managing a day program to leading extended backpacking trips. I spent a year working as a wilderness therapy field guide, helping students achieve a breakthrough in their personal lives in a backpacking setting in central Oregon. And I was an instructor at an outdoor school in southern California for a year, teaching science, leadership, and outdoor education classes. Not to mention my tutoring experience--in college I tutored high schoolers in all subjects, from math and science to text prep and history. As a Masters candidate for a Secondary English teaching degree, I am most passionate about tutoring English and History, and my high scores on the ACT (36), SAT (1570), and GRE (169) certify my aptitude for tutoring toward standardized tests. I love working with youth, especially high school students--so much that I've devoted my life to it! And I am committed to educational equity, helping students from all backgrounds and with all abilities achieve their goals. Throughout college I worked as a course assistant and writing tutor to college freshman, helping to bring students with a wide variety of educational backgrounds up to college level. I love helping students learn to craft an argument, chose their thesis and points, and build a structured, polished essay.
