The student and I spent the entire session on biology concepts, completing his biology packet. We especially enjoyed researching how mitochondria causes wild turkeys to fly farther and have darker meat than farm raised turkeys, trying to identify the role of osteoblasts in fetal bone development, and writing a whimsical story about how calcium ions cause muscle contractions from the point of view of a calcium ion! The student did great today!

Today we went over the student's test and began working on solving systems of equations. I feel right now, the student's biggest weakness is not the process of doing math, but keeping everything organized as he proceeds through a question. He tends to think a little too fast, and gets ahead of himself, so he ends up making little mistakes like dropping negatives or inverting x and y coordinates while graphing. In future sessions, I would like to cover organization of work in addition to the method and logic behind solving problems. We finished the session by previewing the method of solving systems of equations by substitution of variables.

The student completed a practice test from her prep book and we began by scoring the test. Her approximated practice scores were 590 Math, 640 CR, and 630 Writing, which is an improvement in both the math and writing sections. We began to go over the math and we found that there were a few questions that she could have gotten correct, which would have easily increased her score by 20-30 points. Looking over her practice test she is very capable of getting above a 600 on Math and above a 650 on Writing. Her CR has been very consistent. She also wrote an essay today and we will go over it next session. We will also probably continue to go over some essay writing principles. Next time we will also finish reviewing her practice test.

In preparation for a geometry test the student has next week, we went over the concepts that he would be tested on. This consisted of equations of lines and the characteristics of angles produced by a transverse intersecting two parallel lines.

We worked on comparing triangles to determine if they are congruent or not. We worked through problems that were simple determining congruent triangles. We worked through the problems using SSS, SAS, and ASA postulates to determine congruence. We also talked about the difference between congruent and being similar something that happens when you have AAA. We also reviewed topics from previous sessions such as transversals and classifying triangles in preparation for the student's quiz. Overall a great session!

MATH: The student and I went over her recent math test. We corrected some misunderstandings around graphing linear inequalities and reducing inequality word problems. Most mistakes on her recent exam had to do with computational errors - she set up the problems entirely right and then perhaps rushed through the tail end of them. Finally, she did a 15 minute practice from chapter 1 test review in her math book. TEST TAKING STRATEGIES: The student and I worked on pre-test strategies to relax and stay focused before exams. We made a strategy for a) square breathing; b) affirmative statements such as "I'm prepared" or "I know this material,"; and c) refraining from answering last-minute questions/ quizzing which only increase anxiety. Hopefully these strategies will allow her to relax and move more slowly through the test, which will result in less "rushing" errors.
