I grew up in a Boston neighborhood. It was there and then that I learned from my father and my observations of those around me that the only chance I had for a better life would be a good education. I attended Boston Latin School, the oldest and one of the finest high schools in the country, graduated with honors and was a letter-man in track and swimming. After that I earned my BA in English from the University of New Hampshire and later an MA in Reading at the University of Evansville in Indiana.As a career teacher in the field of English Language Arts and Reading I have extensive experience in private, public and charter high schools in New England, California and New Mexico. I have worked with general education, college prep, ELL, SPED, at-risk and gifted students. One of my strongest assets as a teacher is my ability to connect with students from every walk of life.In my most recent teaching experience working in an all-inclusive charter high-school for at-risk students, we developed a rigorous online curriculum, meeting National Common Core Standards, from which students could complete work from home as well as in school. Tutorial sessions with individual students supported the online curriculum, giving me the ability to help students in all their required subjects: Language Arts, Social Studies, Math and Science.My goal as a tutor is to impart my passion for language to my students and to help them understand that reading and writing skills are the cornerstone of their education and their personal lives.

I spent this past fall volunteering with Citizen Schools, a government organization which places teachers in disadvantaged public schools throughout New York City. When I am not working with children, I enjoy reading, running and bike-riding, playing the guitar, and listening to the Beatles.

Writing clearly and efficiently is the key to effective communication. My warm and compassionate approach to tutoring empowers writers to use their resources, work within genre conventions and work through their own ideas in order to write so other people can pick up what they are putting down. Through the development of an understanding context, audience, and purpose one can learn how to master the ability to write well.

I am currently a student at Rice University studying both History and Neuroscience. Being the oldest of five kids, working with younger students has always been a part of my life. I can tutor a wide variety of subjects, but I specialize in writing, public speaking, and test taking. My goal for every tutoring session is to give students large-scale takeaways that they can apply in their academic future, maximizing the efficiency of every session.

I went through the competitive New York City private school atmosphere at Friends Seminary through to Boston College, where I graduated Cum Laude as an English Major. Having played sports and music on top of academics in middle and high school, I know the pressure that young students in this city face. I understand their burden. My goal is to work with students so that they believe can succeed and be proud of themselves. I want students in New York to feel free amidst the overwhelming expectations to get into college. I will work with the student so that we both feel stimulated by a difficult subject. As a current acting student, I understand now more than ever that true learning is being able to make mistakes and learn from them. Any student that works with me will be free to make a mistake, so that he or she will learn from it.

I am a graduate of Northwestern University, where I completed a BA in Cognitive Science (Neuroscience concentration) as well as a BMus and Masters degree in Voice and Opera Performance. I tutor test prep for the SATs and ACTs, as well as math for all ages. I excel particularly in writing and editing and love tutoring in the humanities. My teaching philosophy is one of guidance rather than direct instruction, helping students to discover answers on their own. I am very patient and understand that sometimes all it takes to understand a difficult concept is to explain it in a few different ways. We all learn differently, so I aim to develop an individualized approach for each student in order to make the most of our time together.While I am not being a tutor, I am a musician. In addition to singing, I play the violin and viola and dabble in everything from Bach to bluegrass to covers of pop songs. As an opera singer, I have studied Spanish, Italian, French and German and am accordingly fascinated by the etymology of words in my own cobbled-together language. I also have a special place in my heart for books about turn-of-the-century magicians and anything Viennese.

I have a PhD in Management specializing in Leadership and Organizational change, an MA in National Security & Strategic Studies, and a BS in Marine Engineering. I have traveled the world on ships servicing the US Navy and Air Force, have taught Algebra to young students and adults, read and write music and poetry, and enjoy putting lessons into real world context by showing how topical principles apply to thriving in the world outside academia.

My goal when tutoring is to not only help students learn how to get the right answer but help them understand why that answer is correct. I've found that one of the main reasons students struggle is due to a lack of interest in the material and that this can be solved by making the learning process more personal and engaging.
