I'm an incoming sophomore in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. I've been tutoring since my junior year in high school and self-tutored for the SAT/ACT, so I can help you get the score you want.

I am currently a first year graduate student at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health working towards my Masters in Public Health in environmental health sciences. For my undergraduate, I attended Fordham University and received a Bachelors degree in both biology and anthropology. I know how difficult advanced science and math classes can be on top of other studies, and I am really looking to work through these issues with potential students. I am available for sessions in biology, chemistry, physics, as well as a range of math levels. I am also available for SAT, PSAT, and ACT prep. I have ample experience with academic writing, so I can work with students through many different types of assessments. I know that the subjects I tutor can be frustrating and difficult at time, so I believe in low pressure tutoring where we can delve into the material and move at whatever pace the student needs.
I am a rising junior at Boston University majoring in Psychology. I have experience tutoring middle schoolers one-on-one in algebra and writing. I am also fluent in Korean, and have experience teaching elementary and middle school students Korean. Tutoring is a very rewarding job for me; I feel a rush of excitement when I help a student finally understand a concept. Therefore, I am a very thorough instructor, and am determined to help my students using every possible resource and method. Furthermore, I have had extensive experience being tutored throughout my academic career, and am well aware of the value of a good tutor. I still remember the amazing tutors who worked with me tirelessly, and I can still recall the exact moments when they made everything click for me. I hope to be that kind of memorable tutor for my students.
Gabriela's Harvard coursework in African American Studies involves constant close reading and argument analysis — the same skills the PSAT's Evidence-Based Reading section tests when students have to trace an author's line of reasoning across multiple paragraphs and select supporting textual evidence. Her 1450 SAT and 33 ACT mean she's navigated both major test architectures, and she uses that dual perspective to teach the Writing and Language section's grammar-in-context questions alongside pacing strategies for the reading passages. Rated 5.0 by students.
I am here to support students in navigating and understanding STEM topics. I have been a tutor for nearly 3 years and I hold a B.S. in Computer Science from The Pennsylvania State University. My tutoring philosophy revolves around maintaining an individualized and open learning environment where I can support students through their learning journey. I look forward to helping my students achieve their goals, whatever they may be.
I am a Mount Holyoke College graduate with a degree in Neuroscience and Philosophy. As an alum of a liberal arts institution, I have gained a passion for teaching from previous my mentors and experiences. Therefore, I would like to use this platform to support young students in their academic goals and endeavors. I have 6+ years of experience tutoring in STEM and Humanities from grades K-12. I also have experience tutoring in college level Biology and Chemistry classes. As a NYC native, and a Bronx High School of Science graduate I understand that students are constantly under pressure and competition. My goal is to make sure students understand and believe in their own prowess while continuing to improve their skills and capacities. I hope that we will have an opportunity to work together in the future!
I'm about to start as a freshman at Swarthmore College, to pursue a double major in Classical Studies and Linguistics. I was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and now live in Riverdale. I spent this past year in Israel, studying spoken Ancient Greek and Biblical Hebrew, and performing in an amateur production of First Date: The Musical.
I am currently a 3rd year doctoral candidate at the University of Oxford. I previously attended the Yale School of Public Health and earned a Master of Public Health in Health Policy with a concentration in Global Health. I also hold two Bachelors degrees - a B.A. in political science and a B.A. in biology - from Vassar College. I have been a tutor for twelve years and enjoy teaching very much. I have taught both graduate and undergraduate level courses at Yale as well as multiple courses at Oxford. Some of my favorite activities include traveling, dancing (classical ballet, pointe), and playing baseball.
I am a graduate of Fordham University, class of 2017. I majored in International Political Economy with minors in Economics and Spanish. Currently I am in the M.A. program at the Seton Hall University's School of International Relations and Diplomacy.
I am an interdisciplinary educator with an Ed.M. from the Harvard Graduate School of Education and a B.A. from Dartmouth College. My background is primarily in integrated arts learning and museum education and I specialize in visual arts, history and art history, and object-based learning. In all subjects, I take a creative, inquiry-based and learner-centered approach, designing opportunities for each unique individual to meet their learning goals.
I am a recent graduate from a masters program in biostatistics at Columbia University. I received my Bachelor of Arts in biological sciences, with a focus in neurobiology at Northwestern University. In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.
I am a member of the Brown Class of 2018, pursuing a bachelors degree in mathematics. I graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 2014. (I am able to help anyone with the boarding school admissions process.) Outside of academia, I pursue my passions in dance, travel, volunteering, reading and art. My tutoring subjects are mathematics (from elementary school to college level) and standardized testing (SAT, SAT subject tests, PSAT, and SSAT). I have tutored mainly high school students in the New York State Regents exams and AP Calculus, although I also have experience with students in middle and elementary school. Since I have been through many school systems, including public, private, studying abroad, and boarding school, I have learned many different techniques and can attack a problem from various angles. Ultimately, my teaching style is full of tips and tricks to break down complicated topics into simple, more understandable ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PSAT is a standardized test that measures reading, writing, and math skills—essentially a practice run for the SAT. For students in Bronx, it's valuable because it identifies academic strengths and weaknesses before junior year, qualifies top scorers for National Merit recognition, and provides a realistic benchmark for college readiness. Taking it seriously gives you time to address gaps before the actual SAT.
Score improvement depends on your starting point and effort level, but most students see meaningful gains—typically 50-150 points—when they work with a tutor on targeted strategies and consistent practice. The key is identifying your specific weak areas (whether that's reading comprehension, math problem-solving, or test pacing) and addressing them systematically over several weeks.
Your first session typically involves taking a diagnostic practice test or reviewing your previous scores to identify patterns in your mistakes. A tutor will then discuss your goals, learning style, and timeline, and create a personalized study plan focused on your biggest opportunities for improvement. This foundation ensures every future session builds toward your specific needs.
Reading and Writing often challenge students because they require both vocabulary knowledge and strategic thinking about passage context. Math trips up students who haven't mastered algebra fundamentals or struggle with timing on word problems. Tutors help by teaching test-specific strategies—like active reading techniques and time-management tactics—that go beyond classroom instruction and build confidence in each section.
Most students benefit from taking 3-5 full practice tests spaced throughout their prep timeline, with at least one taken under real test conditions (timed, no breaks). Between full tests, targeted practice on specific question types and skills is more valuable than constantly retaking entire exams. A tutor can help you analyze each practice test to spot patterns and adjust your study focus accordingly.
Test anxiety often stems from feeling unprepared or unfamiliar with question formats. Working with a tutor reduces anxiety by building genuine mastery through repeated exposure to different question types and timed practice. Additionally, learning breathing techniques, positive self-talk strategies, and test-day logistics (like pacing yourself) helps you feel more in control and confident when test day arrives.
Most students benefit from 6-12 weeks of preparation, with 3-5 hours per week of focused study. For students in Bronx working with personalized tutoring, a typical schedule includes one or two weekly sessions with a tutor (for strategy and targeted practice) plus independent practice between sessions. Starting earlier gives you time to build foundational skills and take multiple practice tests without rushing.
Look for tutors who have strong track records improving student scores, understand the specific skills tested on the PSAT, and can teach both content and test-taking strategy. They should be able to diagnose your weak areas quickly, explain concepts clearly, and adapt their teaching to your learning style. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have proven experience helping students maximize their PSAT performance.
