Years of writing and peer-editing rigorous philosophy and religion papers at Pomona gave Miranda an instinct for the PSAT's Writing and Language section — she spots rhetorical weaknesses and grammar-in-context errors the way she'd mark up an undergraduate thesis draft. Her 1560 SAT confirms she handles the full test architecture the PSAT mirrors, including the math sections where her calculus and algebra background keeps things comfortable. Rated 5.0 by students.

I am a member of the Brown Class of 2018, pursuing a bachelors degree in mathematics. I graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 2014. (I am able to help anyone with the boarding school admissions process.) Outside of academia, I pursue my passions in dance, travel, volunteering, reading and art. My tutoring subjects are mathematics (from elementary school to college level) and standardized testing (SAT, SAT subject tests, PSAT, and SSAT). I have tutored mainly high school students in the New York State Regents exams and AP Calculus, although I also have experience with students in middle and elementary school. Since I have been through many school systems, including public, private, studying abroad, and boarding school, I have learned many different techniques and can attack a problem from various angles. Ultimately, my teaching style is full of tips and tricks to break down complicated topics into simple, more understandable ideas.
Dana's public policy background at Brown required constant close reading of dense legislative texts and data-heavy policy briefs — the same skills the PSAT's Evidence-Based Reading section tests when students face paired passages and command-of-evidence questions. Her perfect 36 ACT and 1450 SAT mean she's proven across both major standardized test formats, and she uses that cross-test fluency to teach the writing and language section as an exercise in argument structure rather than isolated grammar rules.
I'm not tutoring, I love walking through New York for design inspiration and taking carpentry, metalworking, and illustration classes.
I am in the process of selecting a masters program in education that will begin this summer. I have 2 years experience doing 1 on 1 tutoring and it is very effective compared to classroom teaching because there is only one student to focus on. I look forward to working with you and helping you or your child get better. Always remember, even the best of us need help and support from others to be successful.
I am excited to be home and help fellow straphangers on their educational paths! My largest wealth of tutoring experience is in foreign languages--particularly French--but I also feel very comfortable editing essays of any kind and working through standardized test concepts. My availability is extremely flexible, and anywhere in New York City works for me. I look forward to working with you.
I am a sophomore at Cornell University studying Computer Science.
I am currently attending Johns Hopkins University, pursuing a dual degree in Computer Science and Applied Math and Statistics. I love helping students and I love the feeling I get knowing that I was able to use my knowledge to make someone else happier. My favorite subject to teach is math because there are so many ways to learn it and if one way does not help I can use another. I used to teach taekwondo and interacted with all kinds of students, and I'm excited to help out more!
As a passionate tutor working on a Bachelor's degree in Economics, Mathematics, and Philosophy from the University of Toronto, I have over two years of tutoring experience that spans various subjects, including Writing, English, and advanced math topics. My approach centers on creating engaging, tailored lessons that resonate with students' individual goals and interests. I believe in fostering a supportive learning environment where trial and error can lead to discovery and growth. My experience includes working with elementary and high school students, helping them navigate their homework, prepare for tests like the SAT, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for math and writing. I am deeply motivated to inspire students and help them achieve their academic aspirations while nurturing their curiosity and confidence. I enjoy: Writing, Reading, Piano, Fencing, Archery, Math, Economics, Philosophy, Law.
Having navigated the college admissions process from both sides — as a Yale applicant who scored 1570 on the SAT and later as an Ivy League interviewer — Allen understands the PSAT not just as a test but as a gateway to National Merit recognition and scholarship dollars. His economics training sharpens his approach to the math sections, where he teaches students to translate wordy problem setups into clean algebraic expressions before touching a single calculation. Rated 5.0 by students.
I am recent graduate of Binghamton University, with a Bachelor of Sciences in Biology. I am deeply committed to the value of education, and believe that learning is a gift and an opportunity for growth that should be available to everyone. For this reason, I am passionate about tutoring and helping students, so that everyone is able to not only do well in school, but to fall in love with learning in the process. Anyone can enrich themselves through learning. This is the foundation of my teaching philosophy: in addition to emphasizing results and academic achievement, I believe it is integral to find an individual approach to each student and to focus first and foremost on teaching students to study in a way that is effective and engaging. I tutor elementary, middle, and high school students in all subjects. In my free time, I like to go running, practice dance, learn new languages, and play ping-pong.
I am currently a junior at Columbia University studying Environmental Science with a focus on Sustainable Development. I have tutored since early high school in all subjects that range from high school entrance exam preparation (SHSAT in New York City as well as MAP and ISEE in Chicago) to the college process (all areas of SAT/ACT/SAT Subject Tests/College Essay help) to subject area helpmy favorites are middle and high school Math and Writing. Since I've been in intense academic settings for a lot of my life (Stuyvesant High School, University of Chicago, and now Columbia University), I always try to be a personable and positive figure with my tutees, because I understand what it's like at that age to have so much stress put upon you to improve your scores by X amount of points, and I want them to feel like a tutoring session is a relaxing but productive space where they shouldn't be afraid to ask questions and tell me what keeps tripping them up. As someone who has taken many of these tests and succeeded, I know the small things to practice and hone as well as the appropriate work schedule to help students not only understand the material or tests, but be able to noticeably improve their scores and cognitive skills.

Frequently Asked Questions
The PSAT (Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) is a standardized test taken by high school sophomores and juniors that mirrors the SAT format. For students in Brooklyn, it's important because it helps identify strengths and weaknesses before the actual SAT, qualifies students for National Merit recognition, and provides a realistic benchmark for college readiness. Many Brooklyn high schools encourage PSAT participation as part of their college prep curriculum.
Most students benefit from starting PSAT prep 2-3 months before test day, though earlier preparation can help build foundational skills. For sophomores, preparation often focuses on strengthening math fundamentals and reading comprehension. Juniors typically use PSAT prep as a stepping stone to SAT preparation, making it an ideal time to address specific skill gaps before tackling the higher-stakes SAT.
Brooklyn students typically struggle with reading comprehension under timed conditions, advanced algebra and problem-solving questions, and managing test anxiety during the exam. The reading section challenges many students because it requires both speed and accuracy when analyzing complex passages. Personalized tutoring addresses these specific weak points through targeted practice and customized strategies rather than generic classroom instruction.
Personalized 1-on-1 instruction focuses entirely on your specific strengths and weaknesses, rather than covering material at a pace suited to an entire class. A tutor can identify whether you struggle with particular question types, time management, or content areas—and adjust instruction accordingly. This targeted approach typically leads to faster improvement than classroom prep, where instruction must accommodate diverse student needs.
Score improvements vary based on starting point and effort, but students typically see gains of 50-100+ points when working with a tutor for 2-3 months. The PSAT is scored out of 1520 (Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 200-800, Math: 200-800), and focused tutoring helps students identify and eliminate careless errors while building confidence in challenging areas. Consistent practice combined with personalized feedback accelerates progress significantly.
Look for tutors with strong track records helping students improve PSAT scores, deep knowledge of test format and strategy, and experience working with Brooklyn high school students. Ideally, your tutor should have achieved high scores themselves and understand the specific challenges of the PSAT's reading, writing, and math sections. Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors who have proven experience preparing students for standardized tests.
The first session typically includes a diagnostic assessment to identify your current strengths and weaknesses across reading, writing, and math sections. Your tutor will review your goals, discuss your test timeline, and create a personalized study plan tailored to your needs. This foundation allows subsequent sessions to focus on targeted skill-building and test-taking strategies most relevant to you.
Yes—National Merit qualification is based on PSAT scores, so improving your performance directly increases your chances of recognition. For Brooklyn students, National Merit status can strengthen college applications and potentially unlock scholarship opportunities. A tutor can help you understand the score thresholds and develop strategies to maximize your performance across all sections of the test.
