In August, I will be starting a doctoral program in biostatistics at NYU. I was a teaching assistant at Columbia University in my department and also have tutored graduate students and undergraduates privately as well. My primary areas of tutoring are math and statistics coursework in addition to math sections on standardized tests such as the GRE and GMAT. I am very passionate about helping students feel more confident and excited about math. In my spare time, I enjoy running, playing piano, and spending time with friends and family.

I am a graduate of Columbia University with a degree in Drama and Theatre Arts. I taught math and essay writing to my peers in high school and college, and have tutored a close friend in her mathematics courses since junior year of high school. I am most comfortable and passionate about tutoring SAT prep, particularly the Math section and subject tests. I believe in supporting and encouraging my students and making material as accessible as possible, breaking down what may be difficult subject matter into terms and concepts that they already understand. I firmly believe in the potential of every student to grasp material that they may think is out of reach, and aim to reduce the stress factor of studying as much as possible. Outside of tutoring, I am a professional actor and playwright, and in my free time (a rare, mystical thing these days) I enjoy playing guitar and mandolin, practicing yoga, and my PS4.

As a tutor, I am committed to helping students reach their full potential as learners. Throughout my years as an educator, I have seen firsthand the remarkable academic growth that can occur when tutors provide students with the individualized support that they need. I am currently a senior at Harvard College where I study chemistry, and I'll be attending Columbia Medical School next year. I have years of experience tutoring college students in math (mostly calculus) and chemistry including both general and organic chemistry. In addition, I am very familiar with all sections of the SAT and ACT having prepared several high school students for these tests. I believe that every student is capable of boosting his or her baseline score on these tests, so long as he or she works hard to get to know the format of the tests and the most popular types of questions. I tutor because I love seeing students develop a genuine passion for the subjects they once disliked (such as math and science), once they understand the power of these subjects and their applications to the real world.

BA PENN. STATE University • Doctor of Medicine, MD Program Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Jefferson University

I am a Penn State Graduate (B.S.) and am currently a student at Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Jefferson University. My goal as a tutor is to help make the subjects I love approachable to other students, and to teach the study techniques that have served me well in school. I have tutored people in Biology, Physiology, general and Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Writing proficiency, and Physics. I also teach SHSAT prep to 7th graders. I am qualified to teach strategy and content for the SAT and MCAT, as well as high school Science, Writing, and Math classes. My greatest strength as a tutor is my ability to simplify abstract concepts using analogies and real-life comparisons so that anybody can learn them. Showing students how their studies relate to the rest of the world is the best way to create long term interest and understanding. My main focus is typically "teaching toward the test," as making sure my students get the grades they need is always the priority.

With tutoring, I am very patient, and it is my goal to make sure my tutees absolutely understand the material they need help with. In general, I explain things in a lot of detail, which could be unnecessary at times, but I think that is better than not explaining enough. Because I'm majoring in Computer Science, that is one of my strongest subjects to tutor in, but I am able to tutor Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, and SAT Math. Her 1590 SAT means she's operated at the top of the test the PSAT mirrors, and her bilingual background gives her an unusual ability to explain English grammar conventions from the ground up, especially for students who've never been taught the 'why' behind the rules. I am a strong believer in the notion that standardized test taking is a learnable skill and believe I can effectively help students get into a mindset conducive to their succeeding. Shun
BA Brown University
1+ Years Tutoring

I am currently an undergraduate at Brown University concentrating in both Materials Science and Economics. In terms of tutoring experience, prior to Brown I have privately tutored other high school students for about a year mainly in the subjects of math and science. Other unorthodox instructing experience includes teaching young kids how to swim, and other college students, the Japanese martial art of Kendo. I am also a Meiklejohn Peer Advisor at Brown which pretty much is a fancy way of saying "guide for freshman year of college." Basically I help out first years at Brown with the transition to college and assist them with whatever concerns or problems they might have during the school year. I tutor a variety a subjects but mainly focus on all levels of math up to calculus as well as all sections of the SAT I. A reason I like tutoring math is that for the most part, once you learn any material (and I mean really learn it), you are more often than not going to remember it for the rest of your life. I sometimes surprise myself with the things I still remember from my math classes in the past. I think the main reason though is that once you have a strong understanding of the basics, taking on harder concepts becomes less of a challenge. The way I teach is pretty straightforward - the only thing I ask of students is to ask questions. Ask as soon as something comes into your mind because chances are if you are not sure of something now, you are definitely not going to be sure of it later. I, and I am certain a lot of other people, have a tendency of just nodding "yes" when being explained something, and then realize later "I didn't understand a thing that person said." The only way to get around this, and I know it can be uncomfortable sometimes, is to ask questions. Some things you can find me doing in my free time are reading, practicing kendo, and catching up on the latest episode of Suits.

Alexander teaches the PSAT as a unified test rather than separate sections — his liberal arts background at NYU means he moves fluidly between the Evidence-Based Reading passages and the Heart of Algebra problems, showing students how the same close-reading discipline that untangles a tricky passage also clarifies what a word problem is actually asking. A 1590 SAT confirms he's mastered the test architecture the PSAT mirrors, and his 5.0 rating speaks to how well that cross-section approach lands with students.

Frequently Asked Questions

Score improvement depends on your starting point and commitment, but students typically see gains of 50-150 points with focused preparation. A personalized tutor can identify your specific weak areas—whether that's reading comprehension pacing, math concepts, or grammar—and create a targeted study plan to address them systematically over several weeks or months.

Time management is critical since you have limited minutes per section. An experienced tutor can teach you how to prioritize easier questions first, recognize when to skip and return to harder problems, and practice pacing through full-length tests under timed conditions. With regular practice tests, you'll develop a rhythm that works for your speed and accuracy.

Taking a diagnostic practice test is the best first step—it reveals your baseline scores and patterns in mistakes. A tutor can analyze your results to identify whether you struggle with specific question types (like word-in-context or algebra), careless errors under pressure, or time management. This data-driven approach ensures you focus study time where it matters most.

Most students benefit from completing at least 3-4 full-length practice tests over their prep timeline, spaced several weeks apart. This builds familiarity with the format and timing while giving you measurable checkpoints for progress. A tutor can help you review each test strategically, focusing on understanding why you missed questions rather than just logging hours.

Confidence comes from preparation and familiarity. Personalized tutoring reduces anxiety by breaking down the test into manageable sections, building skills progressively, and practicing under realistic test conditions repeatedly. When you understand the question formats, know your strategies, and have evidence of improvement, test day feels less intimidating.

Varsity Tutors connects you with expert tutors in New York who specialize in PSAT preparation and understand the specific challenges students face. You can match with a tutor based on your needs, preferred learning style, and availability, ensuring personalized instruction tailored to your goals and timeline.

It depends on your individual strengths and weaknesses. Some students find math concepts easier to master with focused practice, while others need more time building reading speed and comprehension. A tutor can assess where you lose the most points and allocate study time accordingly, ensuring balanced preparation without wasting time on sections you already excel in.
