Recent Cocoa Tutoring Session Notes

Tutoring review by Saul in Cocoa, FL
For our first session, we covered systems of equations and how to find the points of intersection between them (Substitution and Elimination). At first the student did not know how to approach the questions or even particularly understand what the questions were asking, this let me know to start from the basics (which meant drawing a graph of the equations and showing him that the point of intersection was simply the coordinate point at which the lines crossed). The student was very engaged and motivated during the tutoring session. I wrote down the basic steps to solving the systems of equations either through the Substitution or Elimination Method and let him know that it was up to him to continue practicing the methods (this is very important, since at this point, it is all about repetition since he understands the basic concept).

Tutoring review by Monte in Cocoa, FL
For today's session, we focused on the student's recent quiz. He got a 18/30 for this quiz. We went over the quiz together and reworked the incorrect problems. Since he had a test, he did not have any assigned homework for math. He did ask if I could help him with some physics. We did this for the last 30 minutes of the session. Next session, we may revisit his quiz and just check if he retained what we spoke about during today's session since this is the first road block he has hit on a test.

Tutoring review by Ted in Cocoa, FL
The student spent the first half of the tutoring session working on a selection of two column proofs involving congruence of triangles, parallel lines and their properties. The second part of the session was devoted to working on homework questions relating to the Pythagorean theorem and the triangle inequality theorem.

The student and I worked on an assignment his teacher assigned him. The student had some questions regarding concepts he didn't understand very well and I helped him with that. His progress remains steady and it's good to see him taking his work seriously.

Tutoring review by Adam in Cocoa, FL
The student had a test the next day, so this session was a comprehensive review of her problem areas from this section. In particular, we talked about, completed, and reviewed problems concerning parametrization and de-parametrization, converting between polar and Cartesian coordinates, tests for symmetry in polar coordinates, and some conceptual difficulties like negative radii in polar coordinates. By the end of the session, the student felt much more confident about the test and felt as though we had addressed all the gaps in her knowledge.

Tutoring review by Jane in Cocoa, FL
The student was prepared with a quiet place to work. We got acquainted, and he assured me he was 100% into this SAT prep. I administered a 25 minute diagnostic test on critical reading. We went over the answers, adding strategies and study hints as we went along. His main area of concern is vocabulary building. I encouraged him to read, do crosswords, make a list of unfamiliar words he encounters and look up meanings. I gave him a 25 minute diagnostic essay test to complete by the next time we meet. Based on our first meeting, I believe he possesses the basic ability to improve his SAT reading score. He just needs to learn strategies to identify the meanings of unfamiliar words he encounters in tests.
