My name is Shana Cloud and I am looking forward to working with students eager to achieve.I graduated cum laude from the Horace Mann School in Bronx, NY in 2002, Harvard University in 2006 with a B.A. in Sociology, and from Pace University in 2008 with an MS Ed in bilingual elementary education. I am a native New Yorker with over 10 years of teaching experience in public and charter schools, and directing tutoring centers in NYC.In my 10+ years as an educator, I've taught phonics to essay writing, number sense to logarithms. My success is not based on the curriculum knowledge but rather on the ability to:- Identify the root cause and need of the student. (For example, I've tutored many students that claim to need help with algebra, when in fact their misconceptions lie in basic four operations from the 3rd and 4th grades)- Instill the ability to self-learn. Students will not do the majority of their study with a tutor. Therefore, it is essential to train the student to problem solve and self-teach. This ability ensures achievement in college studies as well.- Connect and empower. Students will enjoy their sessions when they form a bond with the tutor based on mutual respect and trust. We set meaningful, challenging and realistic goals; and I share these goals with the student and parent so that we are all invested in the students' achievement together.

I am an experienced Mechanical Engineer currently trying to make my way into the product design arena. I recently moved to Oregon from Michigan in pursuit of this goal! I have always loved and had a skill for math and physics. This was only strengthened through two degrees in engineering.Although my formal tutoring didn't start until college, in high school I did some volunteer tutoring and was often helping my friends with their physics and calculus homework. When I did tutor, I tutored mainly in all levels of math.

I am a freshman at the University of Rochester studying public health. I have been tutoring for the past 5 years. I tutor students in elementary education and SAT test prep. This past year, I tutored students aged 4-12 at Kumon in Reading and Mathematics. Having been a tutee myself, my philosophy when it comes to tutoring revolves more around the learning experience. I aim to ensure my students find interest in what they are learning- that way the tutoring process becomes more enjoyable!

I am currently a Finance major at Boston College. I graduated from the United World College in Mostar in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At this school, my interest in tutoring and getting to know different people was ignited when I started tutoring non-native English speakers. I learned to be patient while teaching new subjects and to cater to the needs and interests of my students. I have lots of experience taking standardized tests such as the ACT and AP tests and would love to spread my knowledge to my tutees in an exciting and dynamic way.

I first became interested in tutoring in high school, where I found myself helping friends in anything from AP Literature to the math portions on the SATs. In my experience, working one on one with people has been incredibly rewarding, as it allows for a deeper level of communication between the tutor and the tutee. I began tutoring more formally when I started attending college at Boston University. Throughout my junior year, I worked at BUs Writing Center as a writing consultant, where we help students with papers from the writing courses, ESL English courses, and various other courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. Being a consultant has given me the opportunity to work with students from diverse backgrounds, whether they be an ESL student in Biology or a student from Boston studying English, and I am excited to return to this work during my upcoming senior year.Working with so many different students has taught me a lot about tutoring, including valuable lessons about different learning styles and communication. My approach to tutoring is typically to begin with a discussion with the students about what they feel their strengths and weaknesses are, and their past experiences with the subject being discussed. I have found that engaging with the student and opening a line of communication helps me to determine what the focus of a session should be and how directly to approach learning specific topics. Some students require more direct visual step-by-step examples whereas others can benefit by completing a problem individually and then reviewing errors. Therefore, I try to keep in mind that figuring out a students learning process by asking questions about teaching styles and specific challenges is often just as important as the material being taught; not only does identifying these characteristics help me better tailor my tutoring approach, but it can also help the student better learn on their own.Outside of tutoring, I am an avid reader, movie lover, gamer, and concert-goer. When Im not re-reading my favorite Shakespeare play or watching the latest comic book movie, I can usually be found jumping up and down at a rock concert somewhere in the Boston area. Music has been an incredible influence upon my life, allowing me to connect with friends and strangers alike through the art of others. Im also a passionate animal lover, and I volunteer weekly to clean and (mostly) play with cats at the shelter, despite being a bit allergic. Additionally, being a computer science and philosophy double major at Boston University, I love discussing topics about technology and existentialism. People tend to say Im the textbook definition of a nerd, and Id have to proudly agree with them. I love learning new things and sharing knowledge with others, which is one of the reasons I find tutoring so rewarding. Oftentimes I find that as I help a student better understand a topic, I too get to learn quite a lot from them, and Im excited to continue to share my love of knowledge with others.

Before, my math teacher had to give me modified work, and now she doesnt; and on the last test, I got the highest grade in the class. We both beamed with pride and joy when my student, a ninth-grader going to a private academy, told me about her achievement; our achievement. We had been working together for one and a half hours a week throughout the school year.Your success is my success. There is no greater reward than when a student who was previously struggling, gains the understanding, confidence and knowledge to succeed. Developing a good relationship and setting realistic goals are vital for a successful tutoring experience. With the proper learning strategies and a little hard work, you can achieve your goals. Take small steps, celebrate even the most modest accomplishments, and turn a disadvantage into an advantage.Learning how to overcome adversity, allows us to prove to ourselves that we can surmount our challenges, achieve our goals, and gain the knowledge and confidence we need to become successful individuals, not just in academia but in life.

I have previous experience tutoring 5th grade students in math, science, and reading comprehension, in preparation for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS), which was a previous standardized test in the state of Texas. My students at that time consistently gave me feedback that they understood concepts that they were previously struggling with, after having a tutoring session with me.My educational background consists of completing a master's degree in clinical medical sciences (physician assistant studies) and completing a bachelor of arts degree in biology. I previously worked as a physician assistant for almost 2.5 years in the specialties of primary care and oncology, and truly enjoyed taking care of patients. I consider myself to be hardworking, patient, friendly, and great with children. I was born and raised in Houston, TX and love to spend my free time with my family and friends, volunteering, and studying spirituality.

I really love the Spanish language! It is not only useful right here in the United States, but it is also a beautiful language! Speaking Spanish will help you connect with and earn the respect of peoples from all over the world. There are approximately 21 Spanish-speaking countries plus many others who have a large population of Spanish-speakers.I hold a Bachelor's Degree in the Spanish language from Arkansas Tech University and a Master's Degree in Spanish Education from New York University. I have taught Spanish for over seven years and really enjoy helping others to learn too. Before I was a teacher, I was an interpreter for hospitals. I have traveled quite a bit through various parts of Spain & Mexico, studying dance, theatre, art, grammar & history as well as doing mission work. I look forward to working with you, the student, on your own goals and will treat you with patience and encourage you to grow and improve.I love to play the guitar. I write folk songs and poetry and play acoustic guitar. I also enjoy acting, so really anything that involves communicating ideas with others!I look forward to meeting you and getting started!
