Sarasota, FL Social Studies tutoring
The first student and I mainly worked on editing and formulating the paper that he has due tomorrow. After tweaking some of the grammar and art historical wording, it looks like he's well on his way to writing a strong essay. He just has to write his body paragraphs and his conclusion. I also let him know that if he has any questions, he can feel free to email me. The second student and I began working on preparing for her final exam. We worked on a general terms study guide that already is fairly well accounted for. I've encouraged her to keep working on it individually, and next week we'll get back together to work on some FRQs to help contextualize things some more.

The student and I began to read through Section 42 of his text, dealing with the French Revolution. We focused on the changing alliances between the King, the nobility, and the bourgeois against the background of peasant violence. His grades continue to come up, though we have yet to see written comment from his teacher. Next week, he is beginning a large group project.

The student and I covered the causes of the Renaissance in Europe, and the social impact as seen through art, literature, and humanist philosophy. We also covered the causes and impact of the Reformation, evaluating the actions of Martin Luther, and the emergence of new religions throughout Europe. We discussed, towards the end of the session, the political landscape of France, and the consolidation of power by French monarchs. He was very focused, took notes, and was quick to clarify if and when he understood the material. I asked him to review the materials that will be included on his midterm, and to identify any specific areas he would like to discuss before our next session on Tuesday. He was quick to respond to questions posed, and to clarify names and dates when he was confused. I am going to prepare and email some short-answer questions for him to review before our next session, so that we can identify areas that he will need support on before his midterm.

Tonight, the student and I worked on her reading for her upcoming history class. She had already completed the key terms and had begun to work on her notes. We reviewed the material from previous sessions, and then started in on the new content. We also discussed a research project that she is starting in English this week. She has to find two scholarly articles on the Jazz Age, and I gave her some places that she could look. After finding the articles, she will have to read and annotate them.

We have settled into a comfortable routine where we review The student's homework assignments. He has a good command of the major issues, but needs some help with deeper insight into some issues. Our major focus this session was the Russian perspective on the beginnings of the Cold War. He did inform me that his teacher has returned some of his previous assignments and didn't note any areas of concern.

The student finished his dialectical journal for Angela's Ashes, choosing passages and writing responses from Chapters 16, 17, and 18. We emphasized connecting the passages to his personal experiences, as his teacher had asked him to include more of that element.
