When I was in the third grade, one of my class's big assignments was to write an autobiography. I said that I envisioned myself getting a PhD in sociology and being a teacher. Today, I am a PhD student in Public and Urban Policy at The New School, and I am adjunct professor at Hunter College at the City University of New York. I like to use my academic trajectory as an example of the fact that hard work can get a student anywhere.I love learning, which is why I love teaching and tutoring. I have taught students of a range of international backgrounds a variety of subjects, including research methods and data collection, social sciences, and statistics.

I am a graduate of Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. I obtained my Bachelor of Science Degree in Geological Sciences, and also attended Graduate classes while enrolled there. Additionally, I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Sciences from American Sentinel University in Birmingham, Alabama. I have tutored students on many occasions in a variety of subjects. My strengths, however, lie in math and science. I have worked with students of varying ages, from grade school through high school level. My greatest satisfaction is working with a student when they 'get it', understanding a concept that had been confusing or uncertain. While this can be gradual or sudden, you can really see it when it makes sense. I also enjoy helping students prepare for Standardized Tests. My goal is to help them advance, while keeping the material interesting. It is also my hope that I can help students reduce the stress they may feel when preparing to take these tests. I believe that if you continue to learn throughout your life, you will always be growing. In my spare time I enjoy cooking, and just about anything to do with water - swimming, sailing and scuba diving. I am an avid scuba diver (PADI Certified Scuba Diving Instructor #68581). I have been diving in Hawaii, California, and multiple places in the Caribbean, to name a few. When I can train, I like to distance swim. In April 2012, I swam from Alcatraz to San Francisco, as well as the length of the Golden Gate Bridge.

My Approach:I tutor in reading, writing, and English. I concentrate on reading comprehension, grammar, phonics, vocabulary, context, proper sentence or paragraph structure, spelling, creative writing, answering worksheet/test questions, and understanding/following instructions.Reading comprehension includes: figurative language, personification, character analysis, identifying details, drawing a conclusion, linking cause and effect, and how to put events in order. My tutoring style for reading with elementary grade level students is the systemic phonics method, which works on letter-sound relationships and word recognition. We take 1-2-minute breaks, at the appropriate times, in order to practice breathing exercises, stretches, get a snack, or get something to drink. With elementary grade level students, some breaks are spent doing a robot dance, or to show me new art projects that they've done.I like to remember that regulating our breathing is conducive for better focusing skills. It also enhances the student's competency in reading comprehension because it ultimately relieves stress, and creates a space for them to become more receptive to learning more difficult subject matter. In each session, I properly evaluate a student's specific needs in reading, and their reading level. It is important to identify how the student uses problem solving skills, grasps difficult concepts, and whether they remain calm when they're feeling stressed while learning a new topic. Reading comprehension strategies that I like to work with are using "background knowledge," "summarizing," and "visualizing." When I review my evaluations, and use them to create the next Lesson Plan, I like to keep in mind that the ultimate goal is to find the best way to help a studentadvance to such an extent that they can independently learn.-Attention to Mental Health:There is a specific type of meditation practice referred to as "Mindfulness." Mindfulness is about focusing on the present moment, regulating breathing, and being self-aware without passing judgement. There is an epidemic of depression right now among adults, teenagers, and children in the U.S. and practicing mindfulness is a way of reducing stress. This ultimately reduces the risk of having severe symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues that a student of mine may be facing.Practicing mindfulness helps people of all ages regulate their emotions. Emotional stressors can negatively alter how a student learns, and navigates academic work. I find it important to care about the mental health, and well-being, of those I tutor because this effectively improves their learning capabilities and educational progress.-Valuable Characteristic Traits That I Possess:I am innovative, articulate, enthusiastic, thoughtful, reliable, adaptable, confident, and a fast learner. My top weakness: When I give into perfectionism and become obsessive about details and design. This occurs when I do certain tasks like data entry or file organization, or when I paint ballet dancers or fictional characters like Boba Fett.-General Volunteer Work That I Have Done:I am also a Professional Volunteer for a nonprofit organization where I assist Veterans, and their spouses, seeking employment by conducting mock interviews in Tech related fields. I have nearly 14 years' worth of volunteer experience; working with the homeless, impoverished families, women in times of distress, Veterans, and the mentally handicapped. My purpose in life is to help other people, and I find great purpose, and fulfillment, in being able to help a student.Reading and Tutoring Related Volunteer Work That I Have Done:I began volunteering when I was in 3rd grade by reading to a developmentally disabled child, named Bryce, every Thursday from 2001 to 2004, in Bowling Green, Ohio. Also, during my Junior and Senior year of High School, in 2009 and 2010, I tutored impoverished adults on how to write essays in order for them to acquire their GED. I did this through the Servant Leadership Program of Toledo, Ohio.-Educational Goals:Currently, I am attaining a Political Science Degree (BA). I also want to receive a certification from completing a course on how to teach children who have dyslexia by using various methods like the Orton-Gillingham method.

Yes, Varsity Tutors connects students from across Newton's 14 schools with personalized tutoring support. Whether your student attends a Newton public school or one of the area's private institutions, we match them with tutors who understand local curriculum standards and can support their specific academic goals.
Massachusetts has rigorous academic standards, and Newton's strong school district works to prepare students for success on state assessments and beyond. Personalized tutoring helps students master core concepts at their own pace, build confidence in challenging subjects, and develop the critical thinking skills emphasized in Massachusetts curriculum frameworks—all while complementing what they're learning in the classroom.
Newton students most commonly seek support in math (especially algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus), English/language arts, and sciences like chemistry and biology. We also work with students preparing for standardized tests like the SAT and ACT, as well as those pursuing AP coursework. Whatever subject your student needs help with, Varsity Tutors can connect you with a qualified tutor.
Your first session is an opportunity for the tutor and student to get to know each other and establish learning goals. The tutor will assess your student's current understanding, identify areas where they need the most support, and create a personalized plan moving forward. This foundation ensures that every subsequent session is focused and productive.
While Newton maintains a strong 10.3:1 student-teacher ratio compared to national averages, personalized 1-on-1 tutoring offers something unique: instruction tailored entirely to your student's learning style, pace, and goals. A tutor can spend full attention on your student's specific challenges, adjust explanations in real-time, and provide immediate feedback—something that's difficult to replicate in even well-resourced classroom settings.
Tutoring costs vary based on the subject, tutor expertise, and frequency of sessions. We work with families to create flexible arrangements that fit their budget and schedule—whether that's weekly sessions during the school year, intensive support before exams, or ongoing help with a challenging subject. Contact Varsity Tutors to discuss pricing options and get matched with a tutor.
